So... what's going on with the beef over there??

Sandra, it is quite horrifying

A slaughterhouse near here was prodding and zapping the downer cows in order to get them upright and past the USDA inspectors. Law is that they must be in good shape and walking on their own, if not they are "downers" and cannot be used.

This was first brought to our attention here in CA a several weeks ago when the very graphic undercover video was shown on local tv in a report on what our schools are feeding our children! Schools all over the country immediately took beef off the menu (this meat company had an exclusive with the schools).

Last week they announced 2 were arrested and charged and this week they announced the recall of enough beef to make 2 hamburgers for every man, woman and child in the U.S. Problem is that most of it has already been consumed by our children.

On a 'this is too much for my brain to deal with and I went nuts' note, on the list of recalled beef are 5-gallon pails of tongue trimmings, lips and other assorted parts. When I read the '5-gallon pails of lips' I pictured pails and pails of those wax lips...

"pails of lips"? There is alot to be said for grinding your own hamburger...

I am positive I haven't "accidentally" included any lips or tongue trimmings in with my chuck roasts!

Anyone know what the job description is for the USDA inspectors?

After the mad cow inspired changes to the law, I understood that inspectors were to make sure no 'downers' or sick cows went into the food chain. Does this person only stand on one side of the chute and cannot see someone on the side zapping, poking and prodding a downed and obviously sick cow? These were not healthy specimens, even to my untrained eye.

I am in no way a vegetarian or vegan, but I do believe that our 'food' should be respected. There was no respect for these animals.

I'm more upset at the actual workers who decided this was an ok way to horribly treat these poor

animals, it borders on depravity, in fact it is depravity. I have to admit it made me cry and made me think, how long has this been going on and where else is this happening.

I hate this way of being. Where is the humanity?

Of course, all of the regulatory agencies have been gutted in the past decade or so. We're actually

better off not knowing how unsafe we are on all fronts. And the folks who run the regulatory agencies are completely under the thumb of the industries they regulate. Caveat emptor

And is exactly why I don't do fast food burgers......

Well, it's the main one. I saw a box one time ground beef doesn't have to be all flesh meat. It can be any parts of the beef. Hearts, snouts, lips, ears, all other scraps. Mixed together. Yum...

I love my meat market man! smileys/smile.gif
