Lakewood is between sibling and mom (Mom's in Bixby Knolls area) and as I prep to go there (and cook healthy foods) I was surprised to see pretty much all the Whole Foods mkts are along the coast in LA, then up towards Pasadena. Weird! We have them all over here.

Also, I recall when I was there and went to some FM's with my sibling, they had little to none when it came to organic. They were pretty sad to call them FMs. I don't want to have this conversation when I get there because it will become a debate about organic food/costs (gawd save me!). So I'd rather find someplace on my own, but the web isn't helping much. I found a Sprouts, but I find them kinda limited on organic and more expensive than Whole Paycheck.

Anyone know the area and can give me some ideas? LA can't be a wasteland when it comes to buying good food!

Welcome to my world! All the healthy choices are in the more affluent areas in south Long Beach

while North Long Beach, which Lakewood is near, is labelled a "food desert." We have put community gardens in only to be disappointed when they don't fill up. (Near the coast we have a 2-year wait list) The same goes for good supermarkets and farmers markets--they don't do well in that area. So the problem isn't just a lack of options.

But there are a few options. There's a small farm and farmstand close to Bixby Knolls--it's on Spring St, between Long Beach Blvd and Atlantic Ave. They are open Tuesdays and Fridays.

On Wednesday afternoons there is a really nice Farmers Market further south at Marine Stadium. And on Sundays there is a nice market down near the water at Marina Pacifica. It's on 2nd St. just west of Pacific Coast Hwy. (right near Whole Foods.)

Finally, there's a local store I like called Lazy Acres that is similar to Whole Foods but even more sustainability-oriented. It's at 2080 Bellflower Blvd. in Long Beach.

Hope that helps, and if you'd like to meet up let me know!

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for...

I'm going to try to make some nutritious meals for mom, which need to start with good nutritious ingredients.

Would love to meet-up! However, not sure I will have a chance. I'm expecting to be a mom's place or cooking most of the time. I fear this is going to be a goodbye visit. Also, not sure I will have access to a car while there. Will need to play it by ear.

Me too, only we had to bring mom to live with us. I had two little ones and hubby was away

in the bay area learning to be a pilot.....only home on weekends. Tough time in life, but somehow, we manage to take it day by day and eventually get through it. Hope it goes well for you.

No pressure, but if you have the chance, email me....

joe at long beach organic dot org. (Put your name and/or "Eat.at" in the subject because I get a lot of junk mail at that address.) I'm not able to send you a PM but if you can send me one, all the better.

The Trader Joe's in Bixby Knolls has two nice coffee places adjacent to it, and a decent sushi place.
