Softening brown sugar?

I have about half a bag of brown sugar that's as hard as a rock. To soften it, instructions on the bag say to microwave it with a piece of bread. I tried that but it didn't work.

Any other thoughts? In these frugal times, I'd hate to throw out this sugar...

Do you have any apples?

Slice an apple and store it with the sugar and it will quickly soften. I used to do this way, until I purchased a little clay brown sugar thingy that you soak in water and add to the harden sugar.

I"ve always left a piece of bread in with the brown sugar. It needs changing only seldom. I've tried

that little clay lump that soaks in water first but bread works better.

Don't know if you mean that you want to use the sugar now, but the bread will take a few days to soften it. ( a crust is even better since it doesn't crumble much)

Now that we've discussed softening brown sugar, how about raisins?

I have a half package of super-hard raisins. I've got them soaking in cold water--will that do the trick?

(Can you tell I'm cleaning out my pantry?)

I don't even bother trying to keep it soft anymore.....(more).....

I let it turn into a brick, and then when I need
some, I use my aluminum cheese grater to get the
desired amount.
