but I'm not able to check in so much these days and I was wondering about all the photos in past post that are no longer visible. Is there a quick way to restore the photos?

Richard, as you know, the code for this site is very dated. To keep it up and running
(while making all of us happy), Paul had to remove the HTML functionality in the Message box. Which means no text formatting (like italics or bold) and while the HTML photo links are visible, they are not active.
Your photos are still at their original source, but the HTML link will no longer work.
You can link to a photo using the URL fields.
