smells fine. it's for use in a cooked glaze for a cheesecake (where my last 3 eggs went). will i never learn to read every word of a recipe before i start?

No I wouldn't. When it doubt, throw away, safer that way.

I would say no. Once a yolk is separated, even if it isn't broken, it's very perishable.

I would, personally, in a pinch. According to eggsaftey.org, they say that

raw eggs maintain their freshness for 4-5 weeks after purchase, if kept refrigerated continuously.

('Not sure how taking them out of their shell affects this though.)

I'd use it but maybe strain it to eliminate any gelling that occured. Or...

break it first and if there's no inconsistency in texture, just mix in the other eggs.

As long as you're cooking it, I say, go for it!

i've gone ahead and made the glaze, boy do i live dangerously smileys/wink.gif, and it turned out as i'd expected

though i spose we won't really know if it's ok till we digest it. as much as my FIL drives me crazy i don't really want to poison the guy! it was brought to a boil with lemon juice and a few other things, so i'm hoping i'll be in the clear. these are the times i wish i had a corner store nearby!
thankyou all for your advice - hope i live to tell!

Debbie, I love your little bee avatar. Did you see the Nigella Lawson honey cake episode

where she made the cutest bees to decorate the cake with jelly beans and sliced almonds for the wings. So cute.
