Source for harissa? Marilyn(FL) or anyone?

I had this in France and loved it. Do you have a brand that you like here? If so, where do you get it? Thanks!

Andrea, this is the only harissa I've ever had, so I'm not sure how it competes with the real stuff

La Maroccaine harissa moroccan hot sauce

Imported by Encore of Hingham, MA

Bought at Whole Foods, 12 oz jar, $6.99

Ingredients: crushed hot red peppers, sweet peppers, spices, carrots, sunflower oil.

Memory lane trip: Decades ago, we were staying in the French Quarter of Paris and our little $13 a night hotel was surrounded by moroccan restaurants. We were extremely poor and so we saved up for a last night's meal at a cous-cous restaurant. That day we skipped breakfast because we were going to Versailles and wanted to eat there. We took the Metro, then we took the bus and at some point, the bus stopped and made EVERYONE get out. There was no sight or sign for Versaille...we were just out on a country road. The bus driver didn't speak any English and we spoke no French, but he was clear that we had to WALK the rest of the way to Versailles. (Later we found out it was some sort of Military Holiday and a parade was blocking the road ahead.) We walked 3 miles to Versailles and then continued to exhaust ourselves by walking around the biggest building and gardens I've ever seen. And yet there was NO CAFE to break our fast. By now it's four o'clock and we still haven't eaten and my blood sugar is getting low which is code for Marily is getting cranky.

Found a bus to get us back to the train which got us back to our hotel where we showered and at 5:30 went out to dine at the most interesting Moroccan restaurants we'd passed on our daily walks. It was closed. And the one next door to it was closed. And the next one too. THEY WERE ALL CLOSED. After the shock wore off, we finally figured out they must have closed for the "Military Holiday". So we walked and we walked and Marilyn was getting crankier and crankier and we finally stopped and had the WORST meal I have EVER HAD. Worst Meal Ever. In Paris, of all places. How bitter is that irony. Then we went to a French film because it was hot and muggy and my culinary heart was broken. We got out around 9:00 PM and took the Metro back to our hotel where wonderful aromas hit us as soon as we reached our block. And there we could see ALL of the restaurants were open and crowded with customers.

Turns out they DON'T EVEN OPEN until 7:00 or 8:00 PM, but then they stay open until midnight. Our budget was shot so we couldn't eat dinner again and we left Paris the next morning for the Riviera.

I STILL haven't had a real moroccan dinner and am convinced now that no meal could compete with this olfactory memory.

Thanks for this link Traca. I hope to be in Seattle next month & I've put this on my list.

I'm still looking for cumin I like and this place seems to have (not sure given the way it's written) North African grown cumin.

I have a jar of that brand in the pantry still unopened. I bought it at HomeGoods and paid

$5. I guess I need to figure out what to do with it. The expiration date is more than a year away.

thanks for sharing your Paris memory---I watched Rick Steve's program last night on Spain and he

mentioned the same thing about late dining there----9 pm or later. good thing to know.

If you'll be in town, I bought my harissa at Spanish Table. As for cumin, I'd give

World Spice a try. Both of them are located on Western, behind Pike Place Market.

Funny, I was at a book reading with Paula Wolfert and the subject of cumin came up there too.

There's something about that North African cumin that must be something special. Between cumin and the harissa listed above, those were the two hottest topics!

Well, I'm not crazy then! I used to buy it in France where it was sourced out of Turkey.

I was making trips to France every few months, but those have stopped and so has my cumin supply. ANother source would be Syria but now there's a trade embargo.

An acquaintance just returned from Turkey with some cumin for me, 1 Tbsp. (she's not a cook)

I love foods with cumin and there is a huge difference. And when it's accompanied by wonderful coriander, what a treat.

I was feeding my current egg obsession and found this rec that uses harissa. REC: Shakshouka

A Middle Eastern breakfast stew topped with poached eggs. I love me some runny yolk. Not sure what a "coriander root" is though. But the picture through the link looks DELICIOUS!

Recipe: Shakshuka (Shakshouka) Arabic Breakfast
(about 4 servings):
Ingredients:
Olive Oil
1 shallot or small onion (diced)
3-4 cloves garlic (chopped)
100 ml vegetable or chicken broth
1 can tomatoes or 5-6 fresh tomatoes
1 red bell pepper (diced)
1 yellow or green bell pepper (diced)
1 coriander root
1/2 – 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (roasted and grinded)
1-2 tablespoons harissa
salt
a pinch of sugar
fresh ground black pepper
Italian parsley or coriander (cilantro) leaves (chopped)
4 poached eggs

Sautée onions and garlic in olive oil, deglaze with broth and reduce, until nearly dry. Add tomatoes, bell peppers, cumin, coriander root and harissa and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Add pepper, salt and sugar to taste and stir in parsley or coriander leaves Serve the Shakshuka, topped with an poached egg (or 2) and pita bread or french baguette bread.

I keep hearing about about Harissa and finally decided to buy it...I love exotic ingredients

I was lead to The Spanish Table and purchased Mustapha's Moroccan Harissa, and while there I saw the same brand of Preserved Lemons. I read reviews and comments on blog for Moroccan foods and these two items seem to have a good following... The two ingredients came to under 20.00 so I placed an order...oops! Then I saw the shipping was 64.50 for next day air. I did not push that button, so I simply cancelled the order. Within 20 minutes I got a phone call from The Spanish Table which is in Oakland, about 4 hours from where I live. She wondered why I had cancelled the order and I told her I was not paying that horrendous shipping for two bottles of product shipped to me, only 4 hours away. She apologized saying they had lots of phone calls for the same thing and were trying to find out what is happening on their website.

She offered to me a 10.00 shipping charge. This is great considering that the bottles are glass and they have to put in extra packing materials.
I was very pleased with the customer service and now am anxious to receive my goodies, which should be very soon. Plus learn how to use the products will be fun.
