Speaking of Blum's...let's take a walk down memeory lane shall we?

Ernest Weil was the inventor of the famous Blum's crunch cake and went on to open the world famous Fantasia Bakery in San Francisco.

I came across his site, I've linked to here, when looking for a nice site to share a little Blum's history with you all but sadly didn't find much to share about where the ladies lunched in the hot pink booths. Instead I found this. An interesting life, downloadable cookbook - and from the looks of it, genuinely nice charitable person. Enjoy.

It even has an old photo of former Mayor Di Fi

PS -- sorry about that subject line ... at least I did't say Mamm*ry Lane smileys/wink.gif

The Sweet Spot bakery in Japantown makes the Blum's coffee and lemon crunch cakes

I forget the story but the gals who run it used to work there. It's just as I remember it as a kid. Besides the St Honore cake from Victoria, these crunch cakes were my favorite birthday cake!

Is that the same Victoria Pastry as in Greenbrae? My Dad plays Bocce with the owner (Rt-ed now)

Great almond paste cookies, very addictive!I seek to find a similar recipe. found Ricciarelli and Pinioli ones.

Oh crumb, what was I thinking...it's at Stella Pastry, not Victoria. Sacripantina cake is

just so good and is one of Stella Pastry's claim to fame. Here's their description, and there's a photo at the link.

The Sacripantina is a multilayered cake made with a vanilla sponge cake, zabaione (a delicate custard made with egg yolks, sweet butter, marsala and sherry wine) cream, and rum. We have a patent on the name and the unique dome shape and over the years it has become a San Francisco tradition.
