Speaking of KA mixers... I'm so pi$$ed! My Pro 600, purchased last...

...spring, DIED a spectacular death on New Year's Eve day.

It overheated and shut off while kneading bread and spewed nasty oily grease out of the head.

This is their GREAT BIG FLAGSHIP MODEL. I was kneading less than the 14 cups of flour it brags it is capable of handling.

Sheesh. Had the last one for 21 years. I still use it. No problems whatsoever!

Boy, are they gonna HEAR FROM ME!

Whoa... How awful.. RIP. I've noticed my new Artisan KA mixer is

much flimsier than my Model 3 from 1963 (my mom's).

Do some research on line. I remember posts a couple of years ago,

(or more) about a problem with those mixers that sounds something like what you're experiencing.

Yup. Thanks Marilyn! I did find the receipt and called Macy's. I wanted...

...to see if I needed to talk to them or KA.

The guy working in housewares said I could either talk to Macy's (him) or KA. He was very nice and offered me a cash refund OR store credit OR an exchange on a new mixer. They would order one for me if they didn't have one in stock.

I hauled my broken mixer and my receipt down there and I now have a brand new mixer. I'll do business with Macy's ANYTIME!

This one says, "Assembled with pride in Greenville, Ohio". The parts are probably from far-flung countries, but at least it was assembled in the US.

We'll see!

Go gettum, Michael. I sold my 40 yr old KA mixer to buy an Anniversary model not too many years ago

And boy, do I regret it. The Anniversary model works okay but is so flimsy compared to my old war-horse KA model. Stupid me to sell it! I tried getting it back but the guy that bought it knew better.....sigh. I hope you get satisfaction.

The guy at Macy's said one of the issues is that these mixers sometimes...

...get stored on their sides while still in the box at the store/warehouse/etc. This causes the lube to relocate (via gravity) to the side of the housing, causing the gears to overheat and the lube to leak out of the seam.

That may have been what happened to mine. He said to never store it on its side, or buy one from a store that does so.

I'm keeping both. The smaller one is great for smaller recipes...

...and for beating whipped cream, etc.

It is making some funny noises, so I might bring it in for a checkup. That's what prompted my purchase of the big one.

See my post above. I got satisfaction.

My 1st career was in retail. Take the machine back to Macy's and tell them you don't

want a return, you just want to *exchange* it. Exchange is the key word. Then they'll deal with returning the machine back to Kitchen Aid. (Most likely KA fix it and sell it again as a refurbished machine.)

In my experience, they'll hassle you over a return, but an exchange? No problem. (No revenue lost in an exchange.)

this would be good PR for Macys. I would shop there---if I had one closer than 1450 airmiles

Glad they came through for you...made me wish I hadn't bought direct..or a refurb

I've always had good luck with refurbs in the past, but never again with a KA. So glad it worked out for you!
