- 87 degrees on April 2nd? In upstate NY? Are you kidding?! Two days in a row now. Tomorrow's high is going to be twenty degrees lower, and that's still 15 degrees above normal.

- Made an early trip to the farmer's market this a.m. So pretty in the spring with all the outdoor vendors, Easter flowers and plants, etc. I found the cutest little containers of mints at the sratch-and-dent store there today, "bedazzled" with pastel-colored jewels and perfect for Easter baskets for the insulin-resistant ones among us! Really very rich looking, and only $1... 'also picked up a $5 cheesecake to go with strawberries tomorrow. I love that little scratch-and-dent store near the market.

- 'Went to breakfast again and got my &W$! home fries this time. Lol. Mmmm, good. Different diner, one right near the market.

- Easter ham ready to go, making angel biscuits today, also the tahini dressing. Everything else will be simple and just put together tomorrow morning. SIL bringing the mashed potatoes. Happy Easter everyone who celebrates.

- Going to nature center walk today. Should be beautiful. P.S.: It was! We stopped at Onondaga Lake on the way back and I took pictures. Then on to Heid's hot dog place (been here for 93 years!) and got the best bbq beans I've ever had.

- Oh yes, coloring eggs, how could I have forgotten that!

My Country Weekend Six

I love the showers and hail we have been having here in the country, a good excuse to stay cozy inside and chat. Yesterday it was 47. The day before that there was snow on the mountain ridge across from us - so fun to watch it melt! I have been watching tennis with my dad and listening to lots of opera and classical music. Cooking a ton with my mom, which is wonderful!

Our Easter menu:
- Baked ham with Penzy's Raspberry Indugence glaze
- Vincent Price's gratin Savonard
- steamed asparagus (local!!!)
- King Arthur's pull apart butter buns
- ginger carrot soup (as a starter)
- Julia's classic chocolate mousse

I may get out my mom's pastry tips and pipe some flowers or eggs on top of the mousse.

Tonight, since my mom has a migraine, I'm making sausage rolls with these wonderful local sausages from Lockeford. Apple pork sausages, a dab of spicy brown mustard inside croissant dough. A green salad and broccoli with Penzy's cheese sprinkle. I kind of wish it was dinner time already!

For lunch today I made hummus and am going to make a little pita sandwiches with red onion, hummus, tomato and cucumber with olives on the side. This might be a bit adventurous for my parents but my mom loves hummus so it should be welcomed by all.

Other than all this food stuff I've been knitting socks for my quasi-step-daughter, pretty blue socks with a twisted cable pattern. She's already excited. I made a really pretty cardigan out of this subtle rainbow wool but after I finished the first sleeve I tried it on and it was not a flattering fit. ugh. so now I have pulled it all apart, sniff sniff, and don't have the right sized needles here to start anything else with it. trying not to panic. I can't possibly be without a knitting project, yegads! It's almost as bad as not being able to cook!

Happy Easter and Happy Spring Weekend to you all!

Saturday Six

My food is done for tomorrow.

I just want to curl up and take a nap, and I have so much cleaning to do still.

I need to buy a new loaf pan. I thought I had, but apparently I have not.

I baked a ham today for the Breakfast Croissant Casserole from Deb. in MI. I did one pan of mushroom, onions and cheeses. And the other pan is fried ham, onions, cheeses and fresh basil ($2.50 for one large sprig, grrrr).

I am loving the fresh eggs we are getting now from the egg lady.

I am loving spring in the Midwest. Our asparagus is coming up and my rhubarb plant has three big leaves on it. Yay!!!

Wool sweaters and 47 in CA and 87 and sunburns in NY - what's wrong? I know you are

probably in northern CA, but it just seems agin' nature (to quote Marilyn)!

My Saturday Six

Watched Lackawanna Blues-good movie.

REALLY lazy lunch-bologna sandwich on squishy white bread and plain potato chips. Just like being a kid again.

My dog had been really sick for about six weeks and he is finally about well, but I could do without the "drive-by" herding nip as he gleefully circles the yard. He really got me good right above the elbow on that thin soft skin. I think he needs something to work with-wonder how my neighbors would feel about pygmy goats? (Just kidding...kind of...)

Have a little boneless rolled lamb roast marinating in lemon, oil, garlic, oregano and rosemary to cook on the grill tomorrow. Don't have any really springy veggies though. Think I'll have to make do with little new potatoes, cauliflower and maybe a cup of avgolemena soup and strawberries & pineapple.

Didn't get around to my cookies today-will make in the morning.

A man from a nearby suburb with five children whose divorce was final on Friday blew himself, his large home and his next door neighbor's home up-right after the police got the wife and kids and two friends out of the house. It's awful when you work for a family lawyer and something like this happens. You start watching for names and wondering whose client he was. You pray it is never one of yours. Both this man and his wife were Pro Se so at least no attorney is wondering if he could have seen this coming or could have done something to stop it. Very sad. I feel awful for his family and the totally innocent family next door who lost their home.

Your loaf pan makes me feel better about buying 2# of pecans & finding 2# in the freezer, unopened.

maybe that loaf pan you thought you bought and Marilyn's vanilla beans ran off together. mysteries
