Starting to clean out the fridge...so far oldest thing was a jar of

apricot preserves that expired 05/01/2008!

I have to get rid of all condiments since we will be without a fridge for a week. I'm dumping them all and making a list so that when we get settled I won't think "Of course, I have Hoisin Sauce! Who doesn't have Hoisin sauce?" Or ketchup, or mustard, or tarter sauce, or green curry paste.

I hated having to do that after our fridge died - and it was exactly those things

that I missed when I shopped for replacements, so making your list is a fantastic idea.

It's amazing how many bottles of "stuff" can fit on the door of the fridge. smileys/bigsmile.gif

Such a good idea Michael. I made a freezer list but not a fridge list and it has gotten

me in trouble more than once. And it's fun re-stocking.

Such a sad recollection. When I moved here, it was in January. My stuff had to cross the prairies,

of course in an unheated container. Prairie winters and at least 6 days in transit. Anything liquid, could not be packed. So as requested by the new owners, I left wads of very expensive food stuffs, many of which could not be bought in N. America.

The new owner, instead of realizing the gold mine she happened upon, just looked at expiry dates and anything that was a day over, got chucked.

All those unique potions that I lovingly lugged back from France, that I wish I could find in my larder now, in the garbage.

And if airline restrictions were not what they are now, I would have packed a box as carry-on.

Moral...If you live in a country where freezing temps occur, don't move in the winter. Won't apply to Tampa/Sarasota/Naples Michael.

Another thought, it's amazing how the cost of all the household/garage products they won't pack

mount up. Since it's a short trip perhaps you can take them with you?

We should ALL clean out our fridge doors

I just went to look at mine. Hmmm- stuff in there that has not seen the light of day for a really long time. I found a jar that should have been tossed 4 years ago but I thought maybe someday I'd use it. Bleah. Gonna clean it out. Thanks for the nudge.

And, by the way, our spice cabinets too

I cleaned out and organized spices/herbs in my freezer last week then boldly went to my cupboard that has three deep, wide shelves full of spices/herbs, thinking I would just take a look and reorganize....oh my. I found many that had to be tossed. Way beyond time to replace. I made a list and did just that. Time just flies, doesn't it?

I'm sad that WF no longer carries the bulk spices it once did.

at least not the one by my house. It was perfect as I didn't need to invest in a whole jar of something I rarely use. Mostly, those days are gone now. Their spice aisle is at best 1/4 what it once was. smileys/frown.gif

Having flashbacks of last month when I had to do that when we got

the new refrigerator. The FIRST new one. Had it replaced with a GE. I love it.

And it's nice and bright and shiny ) now. The jar of Giardiniera that I've had for a couple of years made the move... 'not sure why though, I doubt if we'll ever use them.

The worst part is cleaning all of those pesky jars for recycling smileys/frown.gif hate that gooey chore smileys/frown.gif

This is what I was thinking too, Cathy. A lot of the asian sauces

don't have expiration dates on them. And the spices are the same way. I need to get in the habit of putting the date I purchased them.

I do that when I have a party and need room but 7 days is a long time and besides

I will have a care full of plants and herbs trying to survive Autumn in Florida's 90 degree weather.

Was thinking the same thing. Our trash company said it wasn't necessary so we don't do it.

They suggested leaving lids on jars and rinsing open cans.
