I usually set up a couple of large pots of the stove and the puddings would simmer away for 5 hours. During that time I was basically tied to the house. Also the kitchen would turn into a sauna even with the stove fan on.
This year I was struck with inspiration....why not use my crockpot for steaming. Even though I could only do 1 pudding at a time it was perfect because I could leave it unattended. Did 1 pud in the morning and when it was ready the other one had its bath. The puds turned out perfectly.
I preheated the crockpot and boiled a kettle of water. Placed the well wrapped pud (which was in a pudding mold) into a large freezer bag and sucked the air out of it. Poured boiling water around the package, covered the crockpot and the pudding steamed away for 5 hours.
The crockpot was set on its highest setting.
