Stinky potatoes...I had shoved a bag of potatoes into a cupboard and sat them in a lovely, French, T-fal saucepot. Just to get them out of the way for

a moment. Of course, I did not recognize the stink several days later and they carried on without me. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH my. It really was far worse than a dead animal. I actually have never smelled anything this bad. ANd it was just one potato that rotted. It unfortunately soaked into my T-Fal pan because the bag has air holes. Not just any pan, of course, but one of my favourite set with the removable handles that you can't buy in NA, all clad, induction, just not something I want to lose. The T-fal really absorbed the smell and now the pan is as foul as the potato. Good lesson about T-Fal, which, had I been paying attention, would have realized anyway. I have been soaking it in 4 changes of vinegar and so far, have not noticed much reduction in the stink. Bad potato!

Rotten potato is truly a stink. And the black ooze it lets out equally. Ask me how I know!!
Hope the baking sodo does it. Might try Oxi-Clean also. Is this a non-stick pan and that is why the surface absorbed it?

Hey, maybe peroxide or chlorine per this.
What is an example of a deodorizer?

Disinfectants such as hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, and chlorine compounds eliminate odors caused by microorganisms. Adsorbent deodorizers such as activated charcoal and silica gel remove odorous molecules by attracting them to the adsorbent surface.

It's starting to come around. After 4 vinegar soaks and 1 BS soak and scrub. Yes, it was most certainly the absorptive nature of the TFal that got it, and yes, I did think about that when I put it there, but I didn't think I would leave it so long. I amaze myself.

Can't help with the smell but I can tell you that rotten potatoes will COMPLETELY REMOVE 60 years of varnish and take an oak table down to bare wood.

Yep, my mom forgot a bag of potatoes sitting on our oak table (Mom's first anniversary present from my dad in 1947) left down in our basement. When she finally discovered the source of the smell, the table had an 8" circle of bare wood.

I now have that table...it will need to be completely stripped to clear up that stain.
Be forewarned.

Also, doesn't this bring into perspective the Irish Potato Famine.

This is why I am no longer allowed to have my fruit and vegetable bins in the kitchen. They are now relegated to the mudroom beside the freezer because it has porcelain tile that is resistant to everything!
