Remember our retail extinct Fairfax strawberry plant? My holee grail of strawberries?

It has died.

(Moment of silence)

The photo was when I came home. It no longer has any leaves, they all crumbled off. I give it water, but...no.

After pretending to be a cloning lab to get it, I'd raised it from a tiny little stolon and it took two years to fruit. It finally had it's first berry...then I went out of town and my neighbor forgot to water it.

Now iz ded Jim. smileys/frown.gif

I DIDN'T DO IT...I SWEAR...IT WASN'T ME...I WAS 3,000 MILES AWAY!!!

My sympathies on your lost. You were a good mother.

Yes, try watering them--and soak the whole pot. . .

Those clay pots are known for drying out fast. Water the soil in the pot from above and then make sure the pot is wet by setting it in a shallow pan of water for a couple of hours. Keep an eye on it and keep the soil damp, but NOT soaking wet. You might just get lucky. You can gently feel the crown of the plant - this is the place on the plant just above the soil from which the leaves emerge. If it is soft/empty and crispy feeling, well your plant might well be toast (but still give watering a try!), but if it feels firm and full, watering might just work.

Out of all of the strawberry plants I had in pots from last year, a couple came back this year. I had not watered them since last summer. All the others are bone dead, but two survived. If your strawberry has not truly croaked, it has a chance at coming back from "dormancy".

If your plant DOES come back, I recommend planting it in a more moisture-conserving pot, like a plastic or glazed -inside pot. And try a different neighbor next time you leave? Good luck!
