suggestions for Vancouver, Canada?

We will have a few days in Vancouver in mid-June after visiting Banff and Lake Louise. DH was a city planner so his idea of fun is to ride the public transportation as far out as possible to see neighborhoods. I like markets, neighborhoods, and a museum or two. We'll be staying near the library which I will enjoy visiting. Any moderately-priced suggestions for meals? The only thing I can't eat is soy.

No restaurant suggestions, but some places to go...

We loved wandering around Stanley Park, both on the tram and on foot.

Granville Island is a great arts community and has some fun little food places and shops.

We also went to the Queen Elizabeth Park. It was a rainy day when we went so we only toured the conservatory, but the gardens are also renowned.

Yes. What a treat for you. Too bad you won't be on my exquisite island.

Do you like sushi?

What seafood....sockeye salmon will be in season. Spot prawns may just be finished.

In the back of my mind I am thinking that part of the rapid transit system will be shut down. Be careful of that in planning.

Whistler? What about Whistler? Must see.

Definitely the Granville Market but I think it may be a repeat of SF.

hmmmm let me think.

I'm thinking Butchart Gardens are just a boat-ride away. We went back to VI for 3 weeks after

popping over one day. Such a fantastic island. Love V city as well.

Yaletown has fun places, Minute and Blue Water Cafe are great high-end places...

Gastown is fun with lots of bistros - Steamrollers is a good one

Kitsilano (SP?) over the bridge is excellent

4th Avenue has great restaurants and cafes and shopping

Mount Pleasant is a nice area, and so is Commercial Drive

Tourism Vancouver is a good website for tips, the locals use it

All of these are my notes from a dear friend's sister who just moved here form Vancouver - I saw her in March and got these tips for another friend who was heading up there.

I loved Banff and Lake Louise, the hot springs at the hotel were amazing, and the Japanese tea house on a short hike from the lake was fantastic. I enjoyed canoeing the lake too. I saw a moose and lots of Bighorn sheep! Watch out for the ground squirrels, they are super aggressive.

Have a great time!

The scenic road was closed when we were there. Broke my heart.

It was almost as bad as flying out and spending Thanksgiving in Mendicino JUST to go to Cafe Beaujolais for breakfast only to find out they AREN'T OPEN FOR BREAKFAST in November.

Hi Marilyn, when hubby and I were traveling in our RV, we would get suggestions from others,

to always call and verify their suggestions. Things change quickly in the restaurant industry, and traveling is expensive.. Once we started doing that, it saved us time, money and heartache. I always gave then my cell number to call in case of change.

Marg and Marilyn, we visited V Island years ago...

Loved Victoria, loved Butchart, and fell in love with Tofino and Ucluelet. I teared up when we had to leave. It's heaven on earth!

The train trip?? We did that, only it went to Banff and back.

I was NOT happy with our trip.

First, most of our railroad car views were blocked by tall trees and only then do they tell you they aren't allowed to cut down trees for stability reasons. Most the photos from the catalogs are overhead so we were definitely driving past gorgeous scenery...just couldn't see most of it.

Second, and this really ticked me off: We were NOT told you could get off the train and stop for a day or so and then get on a later train. So we would arrive in a town at 6:00 PM (when it was already dark), get our hotel room, have dinner and leave the next morning. That's ALL I got to see of Kamloops and Banff and Jasper. Bupkiss!

One 15 minute stop at Lake Louise.
Bupkiss!

I'd go back there again, but do it another way.

Loved Tofino! Stayed at the Wick Inn, Long Beach Inn & Sooke Harbour. I'd go back in a heart beat

We lucked out and were there in May. It was cold-ish, but that meant the beaches were empty. Locals told us the population goes from 10,000 in May to 100,000 in the summer.

I would NOT have liked it then.

BIG PURPLE STARFISH!!!!

We chose a trip that gives us a full day in Banff, Jasper, + Lake Louise

We start on motorcoaches between Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper which may have allowed a day in some beautiful areas.
Once we switch to train from Jasper to Quesnell, Whistler, and end in Vancouver, the days are long on the train. Whistler will give us until boarding at 3:00 p.m. the next day. Not much, but we can always hope to come back someday.

The Wick looks very nice and upscale. We stayed at Middle Beach Lodge, old, adults only, rustic!
