Sunday Six (caution: grumpy)

1. Broken espresso machine.

2. Broken hollandaise at brunch.

3. (NFRC) Broken stupid Ikea site that won't let us buy a crib and changing table and charges $90 for delivery--one week later--of online orders...using UPS! (If you order in the store in Brooklyn, the same-day delivery fee is $100. Go figure.) And anyone who would like to look down their nose at Ikea (believe me, people do it here): cribs here otherwise run $200-$500 (and way, way beyond). Thank you, but I'll bank the other $400 for the kid's college fund...

4. Lousy cappuccino at a cafe this afternoon.

5. Brunch was otherwise ok--my take on Eggs Benedict (I know, I know, but my brother was coming and it's his favorite), on thick slices of toasted rosemary-sourdough bread, was ok. Hash browns and spinach salad w/ vinaigrette on the side. My brother brought a mini pear and a mini plum tart, which we ate at the end (minus espresso!).

6. I had to throw out the rest of the pear cake--I let it sit out for a day too long, covered, and the bottom layer was mush. Lesson learned...

I hope you all had much better weekends!

Aww. Hope your week is better. I hate IKEA'S delivery policy/charges.

I've been interested in some of their stuff but am not going to pay so much shipping & the closest store is a drive I can't stand to make.

Dear Grumpy, if the crib is for you, CONGRATULATIONS! As for the other things,

here's hoping tomorrow is a better day. BTW, brunch sounded delish!!!! -- I'm sure everyone else was pleased.

((((Erin))) Are there any consignment shops near you?

I got our crib there for a fraction of the cost of a new one, and I'm glad I did, as it ended up most being used as a blanket holder. smileys/smile.gif

Both of my babies spent most of their sleeping time in our bed, a bassinet/playpen (like this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Graco-On-the-Go-Pack-n-Play-Portable-Playard-Go-Green/17783104), and a portable baby swing that I could easily move where I needed it.

Erin, you are totally entitled to a grumpy day!! Hormones are at work. I know that my kids used the

Greko (sp?) a lot but they also had a crib. The Greko ended up here for naps and sleep overs for a long time.

But here's my suggestion - the most important thing to buy
is a good chair. My daughter has an armchair style chair that rocks. It is so comfortable and you will spend so much time using it. My oldest granddaughter is 8 and the chair is
still in use.....mostly for reading stories now...

So sorry you had a bummer of a weekend. Sometimes it tends to come...

...in bunches. The only good thing about that is perhaps you got it all outta the way at once. I suspect an AWESOME week is ahead!

My prayers are for your peace and encouragement this week.

Michael

Thanks, Lisa...

The bedbug problem is of such epic proportions here that it makes consignment (and vintage) shopping a bit dangerous. But thanks for the Pack 'n Play link--that would be great for when we visit grandparents! smileys/smile.gif

That is important to be aware of - usually the consignment shops here won't sell

anything that doesn't meet current code.

As a resto veteran, I want to ask....did you send any of that food back?

I think more people should send food back. It's a wake up call to the kitchen that they are not on the ball. While they should catch mistakes like a broken hollandaise (It never should have made it to the table), send it back helps the chef know that someone has dropped the ball. It surprises me how few people send food back. And yet, the kitchen can't fix the mistake if they don't know about it.

Complaining and sending food back...

While in theory, this sounds like a good solution, in my experience, it would have to be an egregious experience from hell before I would do that and it would also have to involve me getting up and walking out after sending food back.

Having worked as a waiter in numerous restaurants, I long ago learned never to annoy, taunt, belittle, condescend, or try to correct waiters--this goes for the kitchen staff as well. They touch your food out of sight, and yes, they do things to it when they are not happy.

Not that you're telling the waiter they are responsible for the bad food they served you, but these days, most waiters will find this annoying, and you are creating extra work and trouble. But most of the time, you are really going to annoy the hell out of a cook/chef.

I've seen the response in the kitchen when people have sent things back. It's always been arrogant, a big group pow-wow insulting the customer, many times different fingers poking at and taking tastes of the food to test it, and nearly always a very half-assed attempt to remedy the situation filled with spite. Usually involving a microwave and many times some sort of abuse of the food (I have seen food ceremoniously dropped on the floor and put back on the plate to be nuked), then sauce liberally applied to cover up the obscenities. They never seem to give a new portion that is served correct.

That said, the hassle to the diner and the table is a huge PITA. There you sit with no food, everyone else has theirs and is uncomfortable eating while you watch them. Then when you finally do get your food, everyone else is finished. I'm a slow eater and usually finish last anyway, so this would be a bad situation.

So while I've endured my share of substandard and disappointing meals in restaurants, I would only send it back if I were prepared to get up and leave, and of course I would not be paying.
