Swampy Sunday Six

Well, weekend six!

I made cilantro-lime tilapia for dinner Friday night, with watermelon, mint, and feta salad. Good, light, no oven!

Wow, has it ever been this muggy for so long in Syracuse before? I feel like I am in Florida. In fact, my cousin said it was cooler there than here!

In spite of this, I worked on my daisy garden Saturday and Sunday smileys/irritated.gif 'Was going pretty good until everything turned white and I started hearing my Great-great-Grandma Gates calling out to me. Lol, just kidding, but I did see a lot of white at one point, and I did get a little woozy.

I'm jealous of my neighbor a couple of streets away, that has had a weekend-long 4th of July bash going on since Wednesday night! Smells great every time I go past there!

Hamburgs, hot dogs, chicken wigs, macaroni salad, Loupy's thunderbolt potatoes, blueberries, cole slaw, and German chocolate cake picnic/cookout Thursday. Watched the fireworks from the living room. Too pooped to go to the parade today. 'Gettin' old!

Yayyy, wild dill is back in town!

I'll play...

1. Wrote 4 posts for my blog and scheduled them all - great to be able to relax and sit back for a couple of weeks smileys/wink.gif

2. Refreshed my sourdough starter daily for a full week with rye flour, trying to improve its strength. Hoping for a nice sourdough baking session next weekend

3. Completed six days of intense exercise in a row. Will take the day off tomorrow feeling on top of the world to start the week!

4. Made fresh, grated tomato sauce for our dinner yesterday, serving with whole wheat spaghetti. Delicious flavor, very refreshing.

5. Will make some lemon poppy seed muffins to take to the lab tomorrow morning and make our students very happy smileys/wink.gif

6. Took a huge box of clothes to be donated.

I want to live next door to you! And I was wondering if those

who have blog sites would be able to put a link to it up in the upper left of the post? Like where some have their email address? I think it would be nice to be able to access their site so easily. Kinda like posting a link to the site but being able to go to it when ever we choose. And I know there is a post for web sites in T&T but I would like this. Anyone else?

Sunday Six

...collected from over the last few days... "Swampy"--I agree. I cringe when I think about what our electricity bill is going to be for this month, and the next.

1. The cinnamon rolls turned out pretty well! Hurray. Somehow, eight medium-sized rolls disappeared between the two of us, over two days.

2. Picked up a giant bunch of beets at the greenmarket yesterday, so we had roasted-beet salad and beet-green risotto (with swordfish, a weird pairing, and one I would not repeat--but hey, the swordfish was on sale and the risotto was good).

3. Made an impromptu Spaghetti Carbonara for lunch today. In 20 minutes. The cleanup took longer.

4. Corn was on sale at the market (5 ears for $2?!), so a corn, black bean, tomato, and red pepper salad is scheduled for sometime this week.

5. Really want to make this Apricot, Walnut, and Lavender Cake by Yotam Ottolenghi but am reluctant to turn on the oven... click

6. For dinner tonight: turkey, brie, and apple sandwiches with honey mustard.

It's pretty warm in the city--not as muggy as yesterday, though. I'm now in all-linen, all-the-time mode 'til September, I think.

Foggy Weekend Six

Yesterday I had a wild hair and invited three friends over for dinner, but I haven't cleaned my apartment and way too long so I spent the day racing around and scrubbing and cleaning. It looks fantastic but I was so exhausted, good cardio! And then I had to cook dinner, ha ha!

I made up a big pot of pasta dressed with the sugo that I made earlier in the week, lots of Romano cheese and lots of red wine to pour all around. We ate so much of it and then we decided to go to the movies so I made a batch of Kalamansi lime and rum sours! Then we went out dancing until 2:30 in the morning! It sure was a fun girls night out.

This morning, after a slow start, I made myself a doctored up bloody Mary and Mark Bittman's fast version of the no-knead bread. It's resting for another two hours, I can't wait to try this, it's my first one.

Tonight for dinner I have a beautiful bone-in ribeye steak that I need to season up and let sit out for a while after the bread bakes. I'm going to make a macque choux to serve with the steak and bacon hot sauce.

Reading about cinnamon rolls makes me wonder if I should make some too, but I don't think I have enough butter. I only have one stick left in the house. Would it be too weird to use duck fat? Perhaps?? smileys/smile.gif

I don't know why I have such a sweet tooth lately, I usually never eat sweets, but it's all I can think about. Perhaps I should try to do some baking of some sort. I also bought a small box of Tcho dark chocolate drenched cacao nibs that would be fun to play with, and some chipotle and red salt topped dark chocolate plaques. I think they would be fun to use as a center of a cookie.

Happy weekend!

This is the first reference I have seen to Loupy's Thunderbolt potatoes

I printed it off. I made her Party Spaghetti for a party once, it was so well received. What happened to her anyway?

Weekend six in swampy Virginia...

The humidity is terrible here too!! And it is so hot that my birdbath is never without at least 2 birds, sometimes 6 or more (and it is just a little bowl of a bath) the chipmonks and squirrels have also discovered it...

I was so lucky to spend a good chunk of Sat at a local farm. I got to see keets hatching out of their shells, they got a new chicken tent and added a bunch of new layers (the tent is like the one described in Omnivors Dilemma), I learned a whole bunch about pasture raising cattle and pigs and GMO grains, got to see the heritage turkeys that hatched a couple of weeks ago, they have quadrupled in size!!, pigs are growing fast-the largest weighing in at 110 lbs, goats are finished for the season and they are drying them, produce is growing like weeds. An incredibly fun day. I bought lots of ground beef for hamburgers on Sunday and a ton of produce.

Thursday we picked blueberries, black raspberries and blackberries. My fridge is bulging with berries and produce.

What I made this weekend: blueberry jam, black raspberry jam, red raspberry jam (from some puree that was already in the freezer), mixed berry pie, lemon verbena ice cream (made with whole milk and low fat sour cream-you would never know it!), lemon rosemary cornmeal cake, roasted three colors of beets that look so pretty layed out on a platter with orange vinagrette, pistachios, blue cheese and small chunks of orange, baked beans with a ham hock, tri color potato salad, and the most delicious hamburgers that we have ever eaten! and chicken for one guest who doesn't eat beef.... I still have a HUGH bowlful of every color, size and shape of early tomatoes that I never got to.

A great weekend!

Erin, the cake looks wonderful, apricots should be in our markets any second now!

Thanks for posting, I have printed for my to try pile!
