Interesting, after thinking about all the Americana-inspired options for thsi party, it's amazing how much sugary possibilities there are identified with our culture. My sweet tooth is darn near patriotic!

 
Don't forget a jello salad for your pot luck, or ambrosia salad! That screams summer potluck to me.

My mom makes a semifreddo ambrosia, I should get her recipe and share it here. It's really delicious and refreshing for dessert, and so old fashioned but still par for "gourmet" guests...

 
or macaroni salad... fried chicken... and make that jello salad red/white/blue layered jello!

I would love to see your mom's demifreddo ambrosia! My mom used to make

abrosia salad every Thanksgiving. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've had it. Mmm....
