Thanksgiving prep. started

I started cleaning out the fridge this week. Limp cucumber--gone. Leftover Chinese rice--gone. Almost empty jar of salad dressing--gone. Need to clean the shelves, too.

Then we need to clean the house, including steam-cleaning the carpets. The previous owners put white carpeting in the living room and dining room--insane.

Then menu planning, food purchasing, and assembling the dishes. I love that part.

Yay! Make sure you take a moment, and really remember the moment, and take it all in... The sounds

smells, laugher, silly stuff. Its my highlight of the event. just absorb it..... I do it every year, take my moment....And be thankful!

Barb--I do the same, and I'm glad for it--as elders pass, and kids get older

I always take a "snapshot" in my mind, in case someone is no longer with us at the Thanksgiving table the following year. I savor and treasure those moments in time. smileys/smile.gif

Pie crusts in the freezer, making Turkey stock on Sunday, it's a coming! smileys/smile.gif

Me too, but we are having it this Saturday. Salad ingredients are washed and ready

gravy in fridge along with dressing in Crock-Pot, turkey is stuffed with aromatics, dry rub applied and sitting in fridge for two days according to Geoffrey Zakarian, mashed spuds get made tomorrow and put into crockpot for a slow reheat, green beans prepped tomorrow and put into pan in fridge. Saturday all I have to do is turn on buttons. Dessert is Magic Bars (in freezer) served with Peppermint Ice Cream or Oregon Black Cherry Ice Cream.
Oh daughter in law bringing my cranberry recipe and probably a breakfast cake of some sort. My table is set too. All I need to do is scout the yard for beautiful fall leaves to put into tiny and beautiful shot glasses which are in fall colors.

On T-day with everything roasting, baking, simmering, go outside for 5-10 mins. then

walk back into the kitchen and BAM! You get all the smells you miss if you are standing among them all day. It's my favorite thing to do and the easiest thing to forget to do.

Oh, and learn to take a picture with the timer on your phone so everyone can be in the picture.

We have a new family member joining us this year.

My father's friend died this week and she left him her dog, Gigi, a black Shiu Tzu. So he'll be bringing Gigi with him for Thanksgiving. My son (7) is beyond excited that we'll have a dog in the house.

Is there a REC around here for your turkey? The dry rub sounds very good. Also, about how long

does it take your mashed potatoes to be ready to serve if put on Low in a Crock-Pot? I'm thinking that is an excellent idea to make the potatoes & gravy ahead and then reheat both in Crock-pots. TIA, Karen!

You sound more than ready for your Thanksgiving feast. I have the turkey on order, my recipes are pulled with a grocery list compiled, but I haven't hit the market yet to buy any ingredients. Wish I were as far along as you are, but it'll all get done eventually. Have fun with your family!

Sorry about your dad's friend, but happy for him with the new addition to his family! Your dad's

friend will be happy that GIGI is in a fun home, and playing with your son! Maybe your son can bring a special toy or treat for GIGI!

Always fun to have someone to talk to. My kidsoften hear me talking to Teddy bear and think

I have a guest in the house. I am very animated on seeing her and asking about her day.
Good for Dad to have GIGI.... And good for GIGI to have your dad!

Not Thanksgiving (SIL is cooking that) but I'm starting on my birthday party the following weekend

this week:

Four Queen of Sheba's in the freezer
Pasty dough in the freezer
Puff pastry dough in the freezer.

That's about all I can think of to freeze ahead.

I somehow miscalculated and thought I needed 11 lb. of butter. Then at Trader Joe's I miscounted and bought 13. I have 6 lbs. left. I feel Julia's presence within me.
