Scrambled eggs with cheddar

Salad tray of cucumber, carrots, fresh peaches, celery, and German mustard pickles

Florentines--I received a new silicone florentine pan (40! slots!) that holds exactly one recipe of Olli Leeb's definitive German Florentines recipe. Score. Perfectly shaped Florentines!

Saturday Pre-Opera Dinner:

Baked Ham with Sorghum Brown Sugar Glaze

Green Beans

Kentucky 7-Layer Salad

Leftover Sweets from Afternoon Tea

Followed by a performance of Richard Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos" at Cincinnati Opera.

Sunday:

Malted waffles with chocolate sauce and whipped cream and link sausages, clean up the sweets, and say a sad goodbye to the Chicago grandchildren once again...

Florentines by Olli Leeb

Bring to a boil in a heavy wide saucepan:
60g Butter
60g Honey
100g Brown Sugar

Add:
1 tbls. vanilla sugar
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Let simmer until mixture begins to thicken. Add:
140g blanched and slivered almonds
100g ground hazelnuts
100 g diced candied cherries
100g minced candied fruitcake mix

Drop by teaspoons onto greased cookie sheets (or use your new silicon 40 slot Florentine baking sheet).

Bake for 5 minutes, if free-forming, remove from oven and use a spatula to scoot the mixture back into circular shapes. If using the Florentine form, never mind.

Bake for 10-13 minutes, or until bubbly and edges are beginning to brown.

Let cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to cooling racks with thin metal pastry spatula.

When cool, brush the undersides with:
5 oz. of melted chocolate (I add a tsp. of shortening to avoid the chocolate tempering).

Let cool completely and store in tins.

My favorite cookie--bar none. Swoon.

I had my first in 1983 at the Cafe Lang in Bayreuth, Germany where Richard and Cosima used to visit.

You'll never forget your first Florentine.

Agree. I keep getting a request for my "cookies with candied ginger". Finally figured out it was

Florentines with candied peel, not ginger. Now I have to check out this pan. I didn't know there was one.

So if you send photos, may I please request:

Thank you. Fingers crossed for the roof.

Roof is intact, we started a lovely downpour around 11:30...

Nothing like a good rain to send the idiots inside. But of course that means more for later...

This all sets up my day with a big smile. They are just so adorable. Fiona

is a charmer and bless the people who cared for her so well.

Thank you for the shots.

Maybe the rain will dilute the idiots.

Wow- the food! Incredible, Richard. And the new babies are too
