Thinking about creating a family cookbook.

My paternal Grandmother from Virginia had 8 children, so there are plenty of grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great, great grandchildren. There are plenty of old family recipes floating around and tons of new traditions to be recorded.

Do you have any tips/insights/preferences/suggestions as to what software/company etc to use?

Thanks for your help

I was looking at Lulu's cookbook format to do one for a friend...

The production values seem pretty high, but there is a price--if you use their stock photos, there's a price tag (albeit a small one) for every one.

It's a fun idea, though, and there are other options; this is the only one I'm semi-familiar with. Good luck! smileys/smile.gif

I was almost finished until my computer crashed

and I thought I had a good backup and didn't so I am back at it but I am using Living Cookbook. It exports to Word and then I can edit and add photos whatever and then get printed locally (actually my mother works for a printing co in MS and will print for me)

My computer just crashed too. I had all my recipes in Word Perfect but I did have it backed up.

I've always used Word Pefect (even when I was working)but everyone tells me its not compatible with anything so the computer guy loading "Open Office" word processor. Reloaded recipe files and found I lost the formating. What a mess, but at least I have most of my recipe files and I was doing a cookbook for my neice and I have that too. Forgot to backup my Try File, Telephone Book and some family history. What word processor do you guys use. Is it better to type the recipes in something like "Living Cookbook"? What are the advantages of using a program like that as opposed to a word processor? I fell coming out of Church Sunday (no broken bones - just sever soft tissue damage) and will be off my feet for at least a couple of weeks so I guess this is a good time to fix everything up.

What a nice idea!

I don't have a company or software to suggest but just wanted to encourage you on your book!

For Christmas one year I made a little cookbook for my sister with the favorite family soup recipes using a photo album type book. She loved it! She says it was the nicest gift. So I'm thinking of other recipes to add or maybe a different format.

Would you please let us know what you decide upon doing for your family cookbook? I look forward to reading about your progress.

Elenor - I've tried them all & basically, this is the one I have enjoyed the most

It's flexible enough, it's got a good cut and past and import and export features. Makes shopping lists. Menus. It's not perfect and he just recently issued the new upgraded versionso there are some things that are still to come in the new version that were in the old one - mainly different templates and such. But if you are good with word processing, you can work in Word and create all sorts of templates yourself. It's easy to me to edit the Word documents and make them look like I want, add things, rearrange, etc.

So it's giving me the tools I need to create something I can easily share with or without printing it. I can't afford $15 to $40 per person for a cookbook and this way I can do whatever I want.Print to PDF and share o a website or via email. Print with or without pictures to save money and ink.

Elenor, I use WordPerfect, still, after 20 years, because it is such a powerful WP rpgoram. If you

think I can help in any way, by reformatting to Word (BLECH), let me know.

I like WordPerfect too. When I wanted to send someone a recipe I would

highlight, copy, then paste the document into the e-mail. I've done this this way for over 15 years and all of a sudden when I tried to do that, I got an error message and everything closed down. I took it in to get fixed and they removed everthing. Lost my WP program and couldn't find my disks (WP 13). What version are you using? I still have Version 8.

I use 11, I installed 13 for H but I still prefer the older versions. My favourite is still 7 as its

graphics capabilities are so huge, almost like having Draw inbedded. (I probably have 4.5 kicking around here somewhere) In fact, I think a lot of the word processing capabilities are very strong on the older versions before they started diluting them to accommodate the users of that other program. Once this laptop nears the end of its life, I am going to load in an old Windows and the old WP 7 and keep it for separate use.

In WP, as I'm sure you know, you can also directly create a PDF file to send to your buddies (whereas in Word, of course......you know)

I wonder if Corel would allow you to download the program again for nothing.

Hard to imagine a competent computer techie that erases without checking for backup disks first.

I'm glad I saw it. The WaPo has a food chat on Wednesdays.

Someone asked about creating a family cookbook and the editorial staff posted the article. So I just sort of happened to see it. Glad it will be useful.
