Thinking of making Nigella's chocolate cherry trifle for Christmas dessert

and I think I can make it egg free even!

My mom wants to make the family pumpkin chiffon pie, which is amazing, but definitely is on my forbidden list.

Her trifle recipe has:

--storebought chocolate cake (I could make wacky cake in a loaf pan?)

--cherry jam

--chocolate custard (found a recipe using corn starch that looks fine)

--jarred sour cherries

--cherry brandy (Cherry Heering)

--whipped cream

--shaved chocolate

The trifle is about midway in the video.

I found Morello cherries last night at TJ's, plus a cherry jam that their staffer said was

most excellent.

Another chef friend advised that wacky cake would work perfectly, but to chill it before making it into jam sandwiches, and perhaps backing off the quantity of the Heering.

I am looking forward to making this dessert!
