ethnic food restaurants. It may be more than you want to read, but I was reminded of it by Cyn talking about getting sick eating Mexican food (at an upscale restaurant). Anyone ever have anyone tell you how "brave" you are or how you must be taking your life in your hands by going to little hole in the wall dumpy restaurants? You won't recognize the names of the restaurants, but you'll still get the gist of this well thought out and researched article.http://www.dallasfood.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=129

Thanks, I've seen a report that states Mexican restaurants are usually cleaner with better scores

than many other ethnic establishments. That said, I've had Cyn's experience from many different types of restaurants. I've decided it's due to rich food I'm not used to. Back in the '70s when I had to eat at restaurants very often, I used to order Veal Oscar, Lobster Thermidor and many other of those outdated, very rich dishes and the restaurants were well rated and popular. I got sick several times. That's one of the reasons I seldom eat at restaurants unless we're traveling or otherwise have no choice.

I can remember when I would very faithfully stick with

Weight Watchers for a long time and then eat something very fatty & rich it would make me sick as a dog. An occasional pig-out at my favorite Mexican place usually makes me regret it a few hours later too but I know it is what and how much I ate.

Great article!

I am the one who always chooses the ethnic dive over the bland chain with the illusion of antiseptic cleanlieness. And I have heard similar comments as well: "are you going to order a side of cockroaches," "why would you eat at that cess pool," etc. Interesting analysis on the reasons for this!

I am too Richard and I have heard these comments lots of times

I never get sick (read food-bourne illness) except for overeating or fat-fests.

I can never understand why in a city this size and with all the fascinating possibilities that people will choose to go to some chain restaurant over a unique restaurant, even when it is an UPSCALE chain.

Always amazes me, in Europe or Asia people are so happy to see McDonald's, Starbucks or.............

Ain't that it...one of my favorite stories...

I'm standing on line to see Michaelangelo's David at the Accademia in Firenze. A boatload of American tourist (literally, they were on a cruise and got dumped in the city to see it for a couple hours) got on line behind us. They all had McDonald's ice cream. I thought, I wonder how many gelato stands they had to pass to get to the McDonald's.

OMG. the one time I was in Florence it was so hot, I only vaguely remember Michelangelo's David.

I remember the gelato SO vividly.
