HA! I tried embedded a video on a lark, and it works!

Election Day Cake

Makes one 10-inch cake

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1/2 cup water

1 1/2 cups dried fruit, including cranberries, golden raisins, and blueberries

1/2 cup American whisky

1/2 cup warm water

1/2 cup milk

1 package (1/4 ounce) rapid-rise yeast

1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour, sifted

2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground clove

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 pound (1 stick) soft unsalted butter, cut into cubes

3 eggs

1 cup confectioners' sugar

Combine 1/2 cup of the granulated sugar with the water in a small saucepan. Simmer over medium-high heat until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.

Place the dried fruit in a large bowl. Add the sugar mixture and whisky; stir and set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine warm water and milk.

Combine yeast with 1 cup of whole-wheat flour and combine it with the milk mixture. Sprinkle the remaining whole-wheat flour on top. Set aside to allow the yeast to ferment until the yeast breaks through the surface of the flour, approximately 30 minutes.

Lightly spray and flour an 8-inch tube pan.

Sift together the remaining dry ingredients and set aside.

Drain the fruit mixture; reserve the syrup for later use as a glaze.

In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and the remaining 1 cup of granulated sugar until light in texture. Add eggs one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula after each addition.

Turn the mixer to low speed and add the sponge (flour and yeast mixture); mix until fully combined. Add the remaining sifted dry ingredients. The batter will be stiff. Stir in the drained fruit.

Place the batter in the pan, cover, and set in a warm area to allow the cake to rise, approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Meanwhile, prepare the glaze: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the 1 cup confectioners' sugar and 2 tablespoons of the syrup reserved from the drained fruit. Stir until smooth and set aside.

Bake cake in a preheated 350º F oven for 45 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.

Allow to cool in pan for 5 minutes and transfer cake to a wire rack to cool. When cool, lightly brush with reserved syrup, and top with glaze.

Embedding from y-tube... (I was actually de-lighted it worked)

is super easy. Kinda wordy though, so let me know if it doesn't make sense.

When you are on a YT video page, click the Share button, then the HTML code to share the link is displayed directly below the Share button, however that's not what you want -- you want to directly embed the video into a page, so...

Click the Embed button. Once you click the Embed button, you will see the HTML code for embedding the video displayed below the previous link code, this is what you want...but wait, almost there, but not quite yet.

Click on one of the icons displayed below that code to select the size of the video box you want to display on a page (the code in the box will change depending on size so you must do this before copying the code). I chose 640 x 480 for the size I posted above.

Now, copy that code and paste directly into the text box here at Eat.At and post.

Poof! You're done.

( Squee! )

this cake is like one I love to make from the quilt country cookbook. very Amish-y. video question:

I can't see any videos that require the latest Adobe flash

even though my IT folks have updated my computer. does anyone know what is keeping my computer from recognizingt the adobe flash? IT can't figure it out.

Not feeling confident I could help if your IT guys can't figure it out, but...

I'm assuming they've checked:

That Flash/operating system/browser is up to date
That it's not conflicting with any Anti-virus
That it's not an individual browser issue (aka is it happening on more than one type browser)

There are some tips at the link from youtube that you might check and many thoughts if you do a search on "adobe flash problems" but if this is a work computer you likely don't have administrator permission, so your IT guys may need to work a bit hard to try and solve.

I might try uninstalling Flash and reinstalling it. Normally if I have issues it's because I need to update it.

thanks. I saved it and forwarded it on to my friend in IT. it's not top priority for them, but

I thought they might like to read through since my computer seems to be a puzzle. their videos play just fine on their computers(not that I use this much at all---but with debates and now world series happening during our work day up here in AK, it's nice to be able to watch or at least listen to some of this stuff)
