This might be a petty hissy but it really bothers me!

Something GayR said about going to a local Italian bakery and have them sell you candied fruits made me remember this story (I love your bakery already, GayR.)

Last week my best friend buried her 4 year old son. She asked me to bake cakes for the memorial service and I happily did!

The only problem was, I had to drive the cakes over to the funeral home and that's a one hour car ride from my home. As I don't have that many Tupperware cake boxes I went to my local bakery, explained the situation and asked if I could buy five card board boxes from them to transport my cakes in.

You know what they said?

"Sorry, you only get a box if you buy one of our cakes!"

I still haven't gotten over it! But one thing i'm sure of is that I will never EVER buy another cake from them again. And I have told everyone I have met about their lousy service!

Eva, it's not petty at all! FWIW, If you were not talking with the owner, I would

definitely take the time to let the owner know of the situation.

Sometimes the "help" in an establishment doesn't have the mindset of making "executive" decisions (which, IMHO, is why they will remain "help" rather moving up the ladder of success). They were probably given that rule at one time and don't have the good sense to see how bad their decision would be for business or conversly, just how compassionate it would be to either let you buy the boxes or, heaven forbid, give them to you. That's good business and good living.

On the other hand, if you were talking with the owner, that really is one very sad state of affairs.

God bless you for helping your friend in her sad time of need.

EvaN, That is so terrible and as Debbie stated did you speak with the owner? If so that is ..>

dispicable. So sorry to hear of your friends loss, what a tragedy.

Please please tell me this was an employee and not the management! Even a cynic like me

can't believe a business owner could be so utterly clueless, let alone heartless.

I once needed some small pizza boxes and the local pizza place was willing to sell

them to me for 20 cents each which was entirely fair and acceptable to me. I also wanted to buy some of those individual hot sauce containers with lids from a local taquerria. (Costco as them but in boxes of 1000's)but they gave them to me for free!
So you just asked a Scrooge...

I spoke to an employee but

it didn't help that the owner was standing 4 feet from us, nodding while the employee explained to me that they couldn't sell me empty cardboard boxes.

I would of course be more than happy to pay for them. I also offered to pay all expenses, but the answer was still no.
And to top it, their name is NOT printed on the box (they put a big sticker on each box when they sell a cake which says what kind of cake is inside) so there would be no way that the people at the funeral would think that my cakes came from this bakery.

I could have taken the story to the media but as it is, I work in the media myself and I don't feel comfortable about being a news story....

You know, it's amazing how many people careen (sp?) through life...

...spreading ill will and negativity, without even a flicker of understanding that all of this activity we call "life" is promised to come back to us in a big way some day in the future.

I'm not sure that sentence even made sense, but I'm leaving it alone anyway. You get what I mean. Nothing is without consequence. Nothing.
