Three questions about an island

I'm in the middle of a minor kitchen reno and I'm thinking of installing a smallish island as a "pastry station".

Straw poll: Would you opt for an all-marble countertop, or a countertop that matched the rest in the kitchen (laminate) and buy a separate marble pastry board to put on top when needed?

If a marble top, should it be treated or sealed in any particular way?

What is the ideal height for a countertop where you're rolling and kneading? I've read that it should be lower than a regular countertop, to take strain off bent/raised shoulders, but is there an equation in relation to body height?

Thanks for any advice.

hi Shaun, I would go with the marble countertop. since it's a smallish island, with

a purpose, it will be a lot easier than moving a large slab of marble around. been there and done that, too heavy to be convienent.

my island is lower than the counter tops. it's much easier to work, roll, knead, chop, etc. I kinda figured out where my comfort and leverage levels were before deciding on the height. for me, it's 33" in height and I'm 5' 6" tall, if that gives you anything to go on.

have fun with your new island smileys/smile.gif

My comments agree with Randi

I'd do the marble as well. No special sealer is necessary for it. Height-wise, my island is the same height as my counters but I am 5'11" so Randi's advice is right if you are under about 5'9".
