Thrift store find…

Yes, I shouldn’t have bought it. Where will I store it?! That’s going to take some rearranging. But this will be fun, at least for awhile. We do use chafers at family events, not normally a silver one as my nephew has his catering ones, but this made me smile for only $12. Oddly the legs seem less like the silver was worn off and more like they are cast iron. Weird. They must’ve had the thinnest layer of silver as others on eBay look similar. The rest of the silver and wood handle is in fine shape and the insert is a hardy pyrex 3qt. Here is one from replacements ltd for a good overall view, and mine with the rather Halloween legs (you can bet this will make itself known on Halloween).

I would not be able to resist that either. So there, feel better.

My chafing dishes that I inherited from my mother did not have any Pyrex inserts and when, much later, I was able to find some, I was ecstatic. (It doesn't take much for me these days)

So now I am thinking that it would make a reasonable fondu pot as the glass would be so easy to clean. It would have to be a bit nontraditional though as you would have to make it ahead of time on the stove. And btw, one of my fondu pots has a handle exactly like this one. It came loose so maybe look for the screw underneath and be sure it is secure.

I think the Hallowe'enish legs look very sturdy and are probably made of the only material that could become appropriately elaborate.

But really? $12 ?? I have so much stuff that I need to sell. For example, I have 10 place settings of Rosenthal Taille cutlery, 6 pieces per place, plus all the serving pieces. Individually, each piece is offered at $60 - $80 on eBay. But my stuff is in exquisite condition. I want to sell the whole set, not just to break my heart, but it's time. Do I really want to break up the set? I just cannot imagine anyone buying the whole set. So I wonder what someone had to endure to give up this gem you found.

natter natter

Good find!

Two things I know will go in there will be my hot crab dip i made for every party in the 79-80s, plus hot artichoke dip. I can envision meatball “eyes” for Halloween too. I actually have a copper fondue pot, never used by anyone. Also a thrift find. I never seem to have the right number of pp to pull it out for. Either too many or too few.

This place is unique in that it’s 100% for charity supporting the children's hospital at a big university. The charity owns the building and all the staff are unpaid volunteers. So I think many wealthier people donate for the tax write off. Given they have new things all the time they price low to sell, There is a line waiting when they open, which I expect are all online resellers. i went to a similar store in a very wealthy area and their prices were near retail (aka waaay out of my price range).

if you aren’t looking for top dollar, contact an antique or collector store and they will buy direct, so that will be easiest. (There are eBay assistants who do this as well). They of course can’t pay top dollar as they have to resell. Craigslist or fb market place will be next easiest bc you won’t have to ship. If you want to go with eBay, filter to sold items to get pricing, you can post local pickup only, but obviously will get more cust if you are willing to ship. if You have a big set you can sell in lots. I see many who sell in lots of 4, but then list x number of lots available. I’ve bought 3 lots of four, to get a set of 12 for example, several times. This way you have customers who want to complete a set, and others who want the whole set. And obviously, you can donate to a place like I go. I’m off loading things I don’t want anymore every time I go there to shop, because I know 100% of what it sells for are supporting sick children and their families.

Out with the old and in with the new to me. One of the ladies who work there told me they have customers who buy whole sets of china during the holidays, only to turnaround and donate it back and get a different set for the next holiday.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I'd love to visit one of your local stores.

I've sold a lot on eBay over the past 20 years. Interesting, that US folk will pay more for what I have than CDNs will. The problem now is this border and the fact that eBay has changed the way they do business now. There are other sites as well. There is one that deals with high end stuff but losing 50% to them is discouraging.

It's one of my projects for this week. Just do it.
