Tips on filling large freezer bags with liquid/runny contents?

I was putting up some stock and some leftover chili in the freezer last night. As usual while trying to hold the large bag upright, open, and dip contents, I had it glopped all over the bag, on the ziplock parts, etc. Not so much of an issue with stock, but I have to think I'm not going to get quite an effective seal with chili in the ziplock tracks.

So for those times when you don't have another pair of hands around to hold the bag, does anyone have any suggestions to make this a little neater process?

sorry richard. i couldn't resist...

i scoop out the glop with a pyrex pitcher and pour into the bag.

you can also support the freezer bag with a saucepan like a trash can liner.

oh heck. smooches to you too.

I find a vessel that works in terms of size. Line it with the bag and fold the zipper top over

the edge of the vessel. Or just fold the edge over itself usually works too. When it's full, I unfold it carefully, and only my husband knows this so far, but I zip it up and litterally suck out the extra air. I freeze everything flat on a pan and when frozen I stack them.

I take a quart or larger plastic container, line it with bag and fill. Squeeze out the air, check

the seal again, then lay them down in the freezer. They end up stackable.

Check out Karen/N CA for hints in the Hints list. She's a wiz at stuff like this.

I knew there was a simple solution!

Now I fill silly trying to hold this big floppy plastic bag upright and open, while trying to ladle glop into it. Thanks for the great and easy solutions!

Okay - don't laugh but the large FoodSaver canister is PERFECT for gallon bags!...

I know it's probably a pricey bag holder and I do use it in the fridge but it's the most perfect gallon ziplock bag holder I have ever used - haven't tried the smaller one for quart bags.

I use a wide mouth canning funnel. Put the bag in my 8 cup measuring cup.

to support it. Gather up the mouth of the ZipLoc around the base of the canning funnel and hold it in my left hand. Ladle the contents with my right hand.
