I got this recipe from a friend.

"We eat fish tacos all the time. We dress them up this way:

Flour tortillas

Finely shredded red cabbage infused with lemon zest

Fresh cilantro sprigs

Sauce made of:

Ranch dressing and finely minced jalapeno.

* My friends note:

This is the way they are served at the famous "Hula Hut" on Lake Austin. I got the sauce recipe from the chef. So easy and sooooo delish!"

I go Japanese with mine...

With wasabi aioli, sesame oil and alfalfa sprouts tossed with cilantro, garnished with avocado slices. I'll bet I've gained 5 pounds being home this week cooking with you good folks!

Thanks Glenning. I love fish tacos and your's will be a nice change. smileys/smile.gif

Good tips on both, thanks, thread will be saved, anyone else have ideas? love fish tacos!

Do you batter-fry the fish or just grill it? I've had both types that were very good.

There was a local chain, "Rubio's," that I used to love: light, crisp, beer-battered fish, julienned cabbage, and a creamy sauce, served in doubled warm corn tortillas that tasted like they were made minutes ago. I OD'd on them and stopped going after a while...

THEN, I heard radio commercials for them and decided to try them again. They'd gone national. GAAKKKK! Pre-breaded, frozen, soggy fish cakes, in stale, defrosted tortillas, with limp cabbage that was probably sliced weeks before. The sauce may have been the same.

Another case of corporate ruination. Whoever Rubio is, I hope he knows that his labor of love, though it made him rich, is now just junk food.

nan, I always thought that Greek Tsaziki(sp) sauce would be good on fish tacos.

Dawn posted a nice recipe below.

have you heard of 'fish crisp'? it's not exactly gourmet, but it is oh so good. makes a nice crust

without any greasey batter.

These sound good, I like the idea of dusting the fish with masa

but I want sauce on mine. Thanks for posting, Judy, I am always on the lookout for my old hometown's food that I miss.

Dawn, I think the corn flour they call for is more like a very fine corn meal rather than masa.

Haven't tried the recipe, though.

I've been lusting for fish tacos since EvaN's post, and in the spirit of checking out fish tacos, I went to lunch at Papasito's here in Fort Worth today and ordered their grilled fish tacos. Big disappointment -- the fish was not as fresh as it should have been and was not seasoned well.

Hi Judy...

that has been my experience here with Mexican food in general. That's why we have taken to making our own. I will try grinding cornmeal in my spice grinder and use that. I am doubtful I will be able to find corn flour in any of our stores here. Thanks!

I have changed my mind about batter frying. I tried marinated and butter fried

fish in a fish taco today and I liked it more than the batter fried fish.
