Tortilla press... need suggestions

I would like to make tortillas from scratch, I used to have a tortilla press with a handle, gave it to charity when I got married and we were "downsizing' our two kitchens

anyway, of course now I want to make tortillas at home and would like to have a new one. Brands? Suggestions? What to look for?

thank you!

How about if I just mail you my "Culinary Hall of Shame" tortilla press?

I haven't a clue the brand name but can check tonight. It's metal with a handle I think. I most likely bought it in one of those "mall" grocery stores or a restaurant supply place.

I just don't need appliances around that mock my ineptitude.

sweet of you to offer....

but maybe you should keep it around, in case you wake up one day with intense desire to flatten out something smileys/wink.gif

That would be the one most folks use. Purty durned simple.

Obviously, the make-it or break-it issue with fresh corn torillas is the masa. Here in LA we have a number of Latin grocery stores that sell pre-made masa and some of it is really good and fresh. Makes all the difference in the world. Marilyn, I feel your pain but can't imagine where you went wrong. Remember, less is more . . . unless you're using gunpowder.

Sally, I love my Imusa Victoria Cast Iron Tortilla Press, 6-1/2-Inch

that I bought at a Mexican grocer. They had a few to choose from but I bought this one because it looked more durable than the others and the highest priced at only about $18.

On two separate occasions, I made empanadas and the gizmo really does a nice pressing job. I used a custom-cut gallon size Ziploc bag that I still have and will get many uses from. You might find that a Mexican grocer will have it for less than what Amazon wants.

If I only had more time, I'd be making tortillas. I have a chile and black pepper recipe if you want.

Yeah, Mar will miss it when she needs something very effective

to flatten marshmallow snowmen for her next GBH masterpiece or expando ginger bread men...

Guess what?

My dear beloved (who is the main reason why I would get the press anyway... smileys/wink.gif saw me yesterday looking at presses online, and said I should not get any

I pushed the issue a little further, and he finally confessed he order one for me, that "he found" -

(he is an ebay shopper extraordinaire, so I bet that's where he got it)

anyway, I hope he picked a nice one, will let you guys know when my toy arrives home!

Marilyn, thanks again for offering, I was just about to grab it from your hands... smileys/wink.gif

He is just too sweet indeed....

the cutest thing was him trying to move me away from the searches, without quite telling me why.

So, these things actually work? I have owned one for 10 years...

..but never dared to try it. Do you oil the top and bottom before you press out the dough? I'm thinking, won't it stick if you dont?
And my second thought is, I'll make a mess no matter what I do, I'm afraid smileys/bigsmile.gif
