Total NFRC: Frustration at the gas pump...

I just filled up my car with gas (already and exasperating ordeal with these prices, $2.97/gallon) and I would like your opinion on this one...

The far pump, located basically of out of sight of the cashier inside, has a sign on it "Pre-pay or pay at the pump". Since I wanted to pay INside with a credit card, I waited at the other pump, the one with (of course), the longest line.

While I was waiting to pay inside, the woman ahead of me remarked that she couldn't get the pre-pay pump to work right, and when it was my turn to pay, I agreed that the far pump was a little confusing. "How so?!" the cashier snapped... I said that I had wanted to pay inside with the credit card and that I didn't think you could do that at that pump, so I moved to the other pump island.

"Yes you can! I wrote the sign myself, and you can charge your purchase inside at any pump!"

Ok, now, am I dumb, or is this exactly what the sign says that you CAN'T do?! Or am I losing my mind?

The sign sounds useless to me, if one pump has the same options as the other, why

have a sign at all. Of course the person who made the sign thinks it's absolutely clear, but it isn't.

I think it means that the ONLY options at that pump are to ...

pre-pay inside with cash or credit card OR pay at the pump. The other pumps you have those options PLUS you can pump first then pay inside because those ARE visible to the cashier.
My pet peeve is that I want to fill up at those pumps but I don't know how much that will be. So I must go inside and give them $20 (yeah, I KNOW it's been awhile since that amount would fill up any car) then go pump $20 worth or less, go BACK for my change, hoping they remember I gave them a 20, or just leave with less than a full tank. Or I could go in and give them some more money & pump some more....

Where I live, you have no choice but to pre-pay either at the pump or inside,

since I don't like going in 2x, much less once, I always use my credit card at the pump.

Thanks - that's what I thought...

That makes perfect sense to me, seeing the drive-offs they sometimes might get. Then, what SHE said is not what the SIGN said (which is what I couldn't get through her head - maybe she had been around the gas fumes too long yesterday. LOL).

And I agree - those pre-pay things are useless if you are planning to fill it up.

P.S. I usually do pay at the pump, but yesterday I had to go inside to get some oil, too.
