Totally NFR: The coolest weather map ever! Just move your cursor around the map,

hey now. I might have to send you out to Little Diomede where you can indeed see Russia.

I read where a guest staying at Walt Disney World in Orlando was upset. He reserved a room...

...on the top floor of the tallest hotel on Disney property. After checking in, he called the front desk and complained that he couldn't see the Atlantic ocean AND the Gulf of Mexico from his room. Orlando IS in the middle of Florida, after all!

Actual experience: we lived in Coral Gables and I worked in Sunrise, by Ft. Lauderdale.

Coming home one night, I saw a HUGE RV pulled off the highway entrance and a man, woman and child staring up at the roadway signs. I pulled over and asked if I could help.

Turns out they were French--and only spoke French. I...don't speak French. Through lots of choppy sentences, I figured out they had flown into Miami, got the rented RV and were trying to find Disney World.

Without a map.

I got my Florida map out and pointed out that they were at least 4 hours away from the Universe That Is Disney.

They seemed surprised.

First I tried to show them where they were, relative to Miami. Then I tried to plot out a route for them that they could follow, including trying to indicate that some of those roads were toll. The universal symbol of rubbing your finger tips together and pointing to the road actually worked!

Finally I just handed them my map, pointed up to the highway sign that would get them started northwest and said Bonjour.

Since I can get lost going around a block, I sincerely hope they still aren't out there circling around Lake Okeechobee.

A few years ago some teenaged French houseguests were disappointed they couldn't see the Hollywood

Sign from our house. They just assumed it towered over all of the L.A. area.

Great story, Marilyn.

I've been in LA numerous times, in many different areas of the sprawling...

...metropolis, and taken most of the freeways at one time or another.

I've always tried to see the sign, but after 50 years I still haven't!

Also, EU countries are so small compared to the US. My German relatives...

...came to San Diego to visit a few years ago. They decided they wanted to go see the Grand Canyon. They figured it was something you could do early in the day, and be back in San Diego for lunch.

Ha!

Michael

The sign is not as large as most people think, and not visible from any freeways unless you really

know where to look. There are only a few palm-lined streets where it has the famous towering effect. If you're ever in LA again I can direct you.

I know that whole day trip fantasy about the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, New York, etc. It's a spatial shock to their senses.
