I am looking for the same thing. I am a side/back sleeper and my husband can sleep on anything. . .
And there are SO many choices out there; he tells me to get what is comfortable for me. I would try a "shipped" mattress, but I am leery of the smell (out-gassing) that can come with some of the foam/gel mattresses. We tried a memory foam mattress topper last year and we returned it in a couple of days because the smell (to me, didn't bother my husband!) was soooo bad.
There is a local family-run mattress store that I think we will be checking out soon. They sell all sorts of mattresses and sell the old-style turn-and-flip-able innerspring mattresses.
What a pain. All I can say is don't try a "shipped" mattress unless they have a good return policy. Make sure you understand return policies of major manufacturers when you try mattresses in store; there are a lot of ups and downs. Go and try LOTS of mattresses locally if you can to see what you like. Ask lots of questions about how they are built, what they are made out of, ask about out-gassing, Be aware that just about any mattress will feel firmer at first and will soften with some time. Also note that what will feel comfortable in a store may feel less comfortable than the new one you will have put in your house.
Good luck to you, and good luck to me!
