Upcoming project - spice storage. I have this rare opportunity to equip a totally empty spice area..

what are your favorite ways to store spices, cans? jars? I like to buy herbs and spices in bulk and at the "old" place had little tins with magnets that were alphabetized on my 'frige wall. There is a pantry door and some drawers I could use. the centralized kitchen doesn't lend itself well to storage in the open. I'm trying to keep a minimalist theme. Any ideas?

My friend had a designer do her place and she has those tins. I like what they did. They

have a mix of stainless silver ones and I think Cost Plus World Market sells a narrower version painted in red. So the end effect, she's got varying widths and silver and red.

Those tins specifically designed for spices can be expensive. Keep in mind you could use different containers--just stick a magnet on the bottom.

What works for me...

I've collected enough Penzeys glass spice bottles, both the 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup size to store all my herbs and spices. I have two approx. 10-inch diameter two-tier turn tables and each tier will hold 12 bottles spaced around the outside edge. That gives me room for 48 bottles arranged in alphabetical order and easy to locate with a turn. When there's overflow, I put some that are seldom used (star anise comes to mind, lol) in the center. I have a cabinet next to the cooktop that will hold two of the turntables on one shelf giving me quick access. Most of the red spices such as paprikas, cayenne, pepper flakes, chipotle powder, etc go in the fridge. Most of the baking spices such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and ginger go on the other side of the kitchen with baking supplies.

This works well for me. Of course, cabinet depth will vary depending on the way they're made. Mine are only deep enough for the 10-inch. There are larger ones available.

I linked to a stainless steel version. Mine are plastic, but I've read the newer plastic versions aren't as sturdy as the old.

we re-worked a narrow cabinet that's for cookie sheets into a spice cabinet. we had 2 of these

narrow cabinets and one was enough for the tall baking sheets(well, sufficient---is there ever enough storage space)so we took off the door and attached it to the pull out contraption that we bought at the big box store in the cabinet section(I think they ordered it). It works great, but hard to read the labels. labeling the tops is a great idea and one future project for a rainy day. link is to a similar looking product.
