That's "To Kill A Mockingbird"! Got asked to post an update, so I wanted to post how it went.

I just heard something on the radio about it being Harper Lee's (at 80 y/o) only successful book - could that be true?

Anyway, here was the menu:

It happened to be a nice day, so we had it at one woman's house, on the shores of a small lake.

Fried green tomatoes were the appetizers

Cornbread with honey

Barbequed pork

Black-eyed pea relish over biscuits (not too sure how authentic that was, but it was good! similar to hummus)

Watermelon

"Sweet" tea, Lemonade, Mint Juleps

Sweet potato pie

Fun. Next book/dinner will be "Water for Elephants" (Depression-era novel).

nice menu. do have the recipe for the black-eyed pea relish? it sounds ....

interesting. can't wait to see the menu for your next book/dinner '-))

thanks Dawn

Dawn, it was her ONLY book, period. Your menu sounds perfect!...

I don't think you could have come up with anything better. Everything listed is very authentic. We call black-eyed pea relish "Southern Caviar". I have some neat articles about the author and her book. I'll post links to them, her life story is very interesting.

Dawn since you're the one who inspired me, please post this in the new Menus section. Thanks!

Harper Lee wrote "To Kill A Mockingbird" when she was pretty young- about 35 I think

and she wrote a bunch of short stories that were published in magazines but I don't think she wrote any other substantial works. She was really caught up in research with Truman Capote for "In Cold Blood"- very interesting stuff.

Rec: Black-Eyed Pea Relish

2 cans, NOT drained
1/4 cup plus olive oil
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp powdered garlic
1 medium onion, chopped
1 tsp dried cumin
Freshly ground pepper to taste

In a large saucepan, cover and cook peas over moderately low heat for about 10 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.

In a large bowl, add remaining ingredients together and refrigerate overnight.

Serve with bread or crackers.
