We bought a big bag o'apples in north Georgia this weekend. What's the best way...

I have to keep them in the frig, left in the foam separater. I order Nittany's

from a farm in PA every year and the first year left them sitting out in an un-A/C room. They spoiled within two weeks.

Now I put them in the frig shelf and they stay nice and crispy.

They coming due next week! Yea...apple pie, applesauce, apple slaw, apple oatmeal, apple PB sandwiches...

Makes me feel lucky that I can go out in the backyard and pick 'em off my tree!

Or pick other varieties from really BIG apple trees with lots of fruit on them out in the country (which is what we plan on doing this Saturday).

Yes, living in FL is a big drawback for finding crispy, tart, juicy red apples...

they just are a bit mushy by the time they are shipped here, it seems, at least with the grocery stores...I should order...Marilyn...how do you order from Nittany's? I'll probably google it before you can respond but I'm so tired of craving good apples and not finding any. boo-hoo!

Crow Mountain Orchard

Debbie, I forget what part of GA you are from, but have you ever gone to Crow Mountain Orchard?

We or our neighbor makes a trip at least once a year and pick up some Mutsu apples. Makes for a beautiful and fun trip this time of year.

I'm jealous of Dawn's good fortune too! Val, here's the orchard I order from...

It's in PA--there may be other orchards closer or cheaper, but I've been happy for the past 4 years with this one. I first tasted a Nittany from Whole Foods while working in VA. It was love at first bite....crispy, juicy and tart/sweet.

I get the double tray box, about 40 apples, which runs somewhere around $45. They come surrounded by foam and in two stacked layers. Since I've learned to put them in the frig, they've been fine.

Last year, I went through 3 separate orders before the orchard ran out. My order is going in today.

I'm with you, Val! The apples here in the fall are excellent and crisp. It has spoiled me...

from eating apples any other time of the year. Once in awhile we get good stuff from the southern hemisphere. NO MORE MEALY APPLES! (Thank you, Mommie Dearest!)

I really like the tang of this one, but adjust the dressing

(that title should say "I adjust the dressing". You may like it even tangier than me. In that case, just follow the recipe as given in the CL link)

1/2 bag broccoli/carrot slaw mix
3 apples
dried cranberries
whatever nuts I have

Dressing:
1/4 C brown sugar
2 Tbl cider vinegar
1 Tbl honey
1 tsp fresh lemon juice and a little zest
large grind of fresh pepper
little grind of salt
1 Tbl olive oil

We're in Atlanta, Earnie - I looks like quite an adventurous trip from here...

We've driven to Scottsboro before. It's an an area of Alabama where you just "can't there from here!" It will make a great day trip for us - I love Mutsus. Thanks for the link! They've got lots of great recipes there, too!
