We can eat spinach again!!! Will you?

Truth be told, a huge portion of the spinach pulled from the market was...

...safe all along.

I'll say it again: I had a conversation with the regional produce manager of a large, national supermarket chain and he said he refuses to eat any produce that grows low to the ground, if it is grown in Mexico.

He is suspicious of the cleanliness of the water that is used to irrigate the fields in Mexico. They do not have stringent controls, and don't have proper facilities for the farm workers to use when they need a restroom.

Now we find that the impurities can be absorbed into the plant itself.

I try to avoid anything grown in Mexico. It's not always possible, but I try for the most part...

The unsafe water is legendary, as are many of the sanitation facilities. Awhile back winter squash grown in Mexico was the E-coli culprit because people seldom wash the outside of the squash. Then came the strawberry scare. If the spinach was grown in California, then I'll look for it from other states for a bit. But with the "all clear" being given, I'll probably be buying it down the road.

Yeah, you're right in pointing out that this incident was domestic and not a 'mexico' thing.

I am with you when it comes to mexican produce. I just don't trust their system (who could?) and don't want to risk our health.

I get the feeling spinach will be one of the safest crops to eat, at least for the time being. All eyes are on the producers, and they'll be extra careful.

Most of the winter spinach is grown in the Imperial valley in California and

in Yuma,AZ area.

The summer spinach is grown in California with a climate like Salinas.

For me and my family, I'm putting in seeds tomorrow. They still have not told us

why this happened and that scares me. I pulled my dead tomatoes out, hubby tilled in an organic fertilizer and away I go. Water will come from City water, so I'm not worried. My garden has never made us ill.

I'm there, as soon as I can get my hands on it. Was told at Publix today it would be awhile, they

didn't seem to have the info in the article Gayle linked.

Curious--was cooked spinach ok? I've never taken to raw spinach anyway, it' tastes so RAW.
