We found HUGE morels tonight - see pix....

I found a mushroom like that....

in my garden a lot of years ago.
I could not find anyone who could identify it for me, so I was NOT going to eat it.
A person at a large nursery nearby said there are "false" morels that might not be so good for human consumption.
I was bummed, since I love morels!

Judy - it's easy to tell them apart so they are VERY safe to eat

False morels really look a little different but the tell tell sign is that all types of morels are completely hollow but false morels have a sort of cottony/webby like stuff in them. Half free morels are so unique that there isn't a 'false' half free so no worries at all on them.

shucks, we almost met again--I'll be there weekend after this. expensive, yes, but they weigh

almost nothing. We had them in the woods when I lived in the Interior.

I always pick up some and mix them with with some criminis for Wild Mushrooms and Barley Soup.

Thought it was in my files, but not. Will type it this evening if anyone is interested?

Take care, Ang,
Nan

we really must rendezvous sometime and meet with Traca. what fun. we were there for DH medical

stuff at Swedish at the Cyberknife center. Very Star Wars-like, robot arm radiation technology. Didn't have much notice, but will have to come down every 3 months for awhile for follow-up. We will be down next week too, on the 23rd, but just overnight. We leave for Acapulco on the 24th and then cruise back up to Seattle. Some much needed R&R for the 2 of us. We've been staying at the Mayflower---enjoyed the happy hour at Oliver's a bit too much last night smileys/wink.gif

Hi Nan, I'd love to see the recipe. Have been making

this particular recipe for a long time so I'm getting tired of it. Maybe yours will be a little different and shakes things up a bit. ;o)

Mushroom and Barley Soup

2 tbsp butter
1 small onion or 2 leeks, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 carrot, chopped
1 celery rib, chopped
1/2 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
3/4 lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced or coarsely chopped
5-6 cups beef broth (sometimes I use 1/2 chicken broth, 1/2 beef broth or all chicken)
1/3 cup uncooked barley
3 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
1/2 tsp dried thyme leaves
bay leaf
salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
juice of 1/2 lemon (optional)

In large saucepan or small stockpot melt butter, add onion, garlic, carrot, celery, bell pepper (if using), saute 2 minutes. Add mushrooms, saute 1 to 2 minutes. Add remaining ingredients except lemon juice. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer about 30 minutes until barley is tender. Add lemon juice, if desired. Can also add any leftover bits of chopped chicken, turkey or roast beef, if desired.
