we have squash! I didn't think the season would be long enough. such fun

recipe ideas? have not done blossoms before. do you pick them off the ends, or pick them before

the squash starts growing? I hate losing squashies by picking the blossoms. we have just 2 plants----they were freebies from a friend and I put them in as an afterthought thinking they wouldn't produce. I was wrong!

Ang, you only pick the male flowers, the ones with thin stems and no squash attached.

If you pick them after the fold up a little, then they will already have done their pollinating.

You can chop them up and saute them, better yet chop them and put them into a quesadilla.

For a truly decadent treat, stuff them with a little ricotta cheese, dip in beer batter and fry.

I had both male and female squash blossoms. I love the female blossoms with baby

squash attached, dip in tempura batter and fry to a golden brown. So yummy. I do the same with the male blossoms too. They are hard to come buy at our market, and when they do have them, they are expensive from some of the growers. Some sell bags of the blossoms for a good price.

oh man, I have to check the s e x of the blossoms?! will DH learn this in master gardener class?

He signed up for the Fall class. getting serious about his little garden

Joe, I'm so glad to have this info at last. One of those things I've always wondered. thx

I always ignored sexuality in the garden and just used any of them.

The flatbread had garlic, squash blossoms, truffles, parmesan and

olive oil. I think dollops of ricotta would be amazing on this...

And I have to admit that it is confusing when the "female" flower stems

are shaped like zucchini.

Actually you can use either--after the female flowers fold up they can be detached from the squash and used. If you do it beforehand the baby squash won't be pollinated and won't grow.

Haha, it's not complicated I promise. Just look closely--some flowers are attached to baby squash

and some are on long skinny stems. DH will learn much more than that about the sex life of plants in his class.

If you're going to "cook the book," check page 43, Gourmet

I just made these--I think the batter is slightly lighter using club soda vs using beer, but be sure you use carbonated liquid with the flour. Enjoy your beautiful zucchini!
