Wednesday Heavy Pupus Party for 18 on a whim

On Friday I finished a grueling week of board meetings at work (I coordinated 2 boards with 16 committee meetings, 2 board meetings, lunches, a dinner and a partridge in a pear tree) and was already tired. On Monday some sort of evil whim came over me and I suddenly invited some board members/ spouses to come to my house Wednesday. It burgeoned and became 16 (18 with me and DH). 20 years ago it would have been nothing to create this party but at almost 71 holy cow it nearly did me in smileys/smile.gif Luckily I am an organized person and had made all these dishes before. It all turned out great and a good time was had by all. I thought you might enjoy seeing the spread. Here was the menu:

Chicken and Wild Rice Salad with grapes, apples and slivered almonds

Layered Pesto and Cheese Torte (cheeses: cream cheese, Brie mixed with whipped cream)

Belgian Endive Boats (marinated goat cheese, marinated papaya, pickled beets and onions, mint)

Roasted Red Potatoes with Sour Cream and Caviar

James Beard's Wonderful Pate

Smoked Salmon Cheesecake (savory)

Cucumber Canapes with Kalamatas and Radish

Grilled Marinated Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp (dill, lemon juice & zest, oil)

Assorted Olives

Assorted Breads and Crackers

2 Apple Custard Pies

7 Layer Bars

I have found that as well. Crazy thing is that now I have the time, but where did the energy go? I

don't develop the kind of angst that a lot of people do; my friends ask me why I don't get frazzled. I think I never did, but it seems like so much work now.

In fairness to your energy level though Cathy, look what you produced. You sure could have made much simpler items. That may be the clue, but I know that it just doesn't seem as rewarding.

As a little aside, your beautiful array here includes the smoked salmon cheesecake. I have never made it but am so surprised by its height. I always imagined a 1-2" cake.

Lucky guests.

Outstanding - you are amazing!!!!

Also out of words! So very impressed Cathy, but not surprised! Love your picture - thanks for sharing. And I know that everyone had a wonderful time! Colleen

I might mention, too, that the first time I did a dinner party without old H, I was STUNNED at how

much more work it is for one. Yikes, I almost decided to give it up. What a difference it makes having an extra body to chop, or clean or go back to the store or entertain while one is in the kitchen.

But yup, I think now it's the age.

Thanks everyone- and Richard, the name cards are a signature of mine

Once I realized how much time is spent trying to explain each dish to everyone I turned to name cards and voila! No more explaining needed. I created backgrounds, saved as a template and all I had to do is drop in the names of the dishes then printed on 110 lb card stock.
