Weekend Six? I'll be back with mine after I finish "Sunday"

My six

1. Getting ready to pickle asparagus and okra.

2. Repeated looking and handling of fruit vinegar brewing. They are such a beautiful color.

3. Trying to figure out how to package the vinegars. I may process them in half-pint jars and will look at dollar store to see if they have anything.

4. I fried up some baby new potatoes I got from the vendor next to me. I will make potato salad with the baby red potatoes. Delish!

5. Working on my menu for next weekend.

6. I thought of a way to display food at the market. Fill a large rectangular plastic container with water, freeze the night before, and place sample containers on top of the ice block. I will still replenish with ice.
Oh wait, I just had another idea, freeze the container of water with weighted empty containers sitting in it. Then fill with product the next morning. That should work.
It might be a nice solution for keeping food cold at parties and functions too. I have seen something done like that with milk cartons, but I cannot remember what it was.

My six....

Baked up some sweet potato jerky for the pup - his favorite.

Copied a dozen more recipes into my "to try" folder which would explode if it were a physical file.

Had a carton of almond milk I didn't know what to do with, so used it to make kheer which turned out well.

Reduced apple cider in preparation for the cider apple torte I am making for Tuesday.

Made paella for which hubby was eternally grateful.

The Kings, which just can't seem to win the cup, are playing again tonight so it's leftover paella and BLTs...not exactly a go-together meal, but I don't care for paella and love BLTs smileys/smile.gif

My Six

After having samaly at the Greekfest, I have to learn how to make it. It's an orange-honey flavored farina (someone said) cake and very good.

Made tuna-noodle casserole for dinner.

Planted the rest of my red chard. I wonder how large they grow... I planted 6 of them.

Cheezz, I also have a carton of almond milk I'm trying to figure out what to do with.

Making mustard-potato salad with dill for this week.

Want to try baking sweet potato fries soon. Had some Friday night and they were great!

My six...

Kitchen isn’t well organized yet, cooking has to be simple.

Attended some farmer’s markets this weekend, nothing exciting so far. Pretty much squash, tomatoes and cucumbers. Perhaps the weather is getting too warm for other crops. I really miss the local produce and markets in Sarasota. When I ask about places to buy nice produce, I draw blank looks. I’m beginning to think meat and potatoes are the rule. The bright side is when tomatoes are available, they’re really good and taste better than Florida tomatoes.

I did find a better Costco than the one I’d been using and started stocking the freezer. Today I bought cod, scallops, crab cakes (simple cooking), spinach ravioli, flank steak and pork tenderloin. I guess it will take awhile to get it filled.

Made two trips to Whole Foods to buy Italian sausage which is a staple ingredient for me. They didn’t have any either time. Finally found some at Central Market.

Whole Foods had broccoli rabe, will make orecchiette, broccoli rabe and Italian sausage for dinner tonight. After almost 3 months of eating out, I’m craving fruits, veggies and green salad that isn’t mostly iceberg.

Two more farmer’s markets to check out during the week. It’s quite a drive to any of them, hoping to find one that is a bit more varied. One of the houses we looked at had a very large completely fenced and netted raised bed garden on the lot. Should have bought it!

Weekend six

Scored 2 three packs of organic strawberries for $10 at the FM today! So with 6 baskets might need to do something besides smoothies with them. (I love going to the FM late and getting the late day deals.)

Also got some small, but not cherry, hydroponic tomatoes there and I snacked on them till I ate them all up! So good.

Got some summer squash and corn to try the magic micro method for myself.

Too hot too cook, so grabbed a frozen pizza (I know, I know - I'm a cheater): Bellafoglia BBQ Chicken with roasted red onions, cilantro, fontina, mozzarella and smoked mozzarella with a cornmeal crust. Shocked at how seriously good it was.

Friday had the worst dining experience of my life. We (party of 3) went to a winery "Flights and Bites" event. Tickets were $30 for a sit-down fixed menu (FYI, this winery normally is free for wine tasting so I'm not counting it in the price): cheese, appetizer and dessert course. To start there were no plates, flatware or napkins. Who does this? When we asked our server, he seemed surprised that we needed any of this. The platters were a paper plate. When we asked for indiv plates, there were none. They gave us 1(!) cocktail napkin as a stand in. None for hands. We each got 1 or less pieces of cheese, so I got one 1/2" cube of gouda, 1 date, 1/2 dime size smear brie, and we split about 1T of blue cheese using a plastic knife 2 tiny pieces of bread + 1 cracker. So you needed to eat it with your hands because there wasn't enough bread/crackers. When I asked if there was some mistake on the portions, our server said no - each person would only get one piece/item.

The appetizer sampler was worse--the sausage bites were about 1/4 in length and part of the appetizers were missing. For instance, the menu said Tomato Confit with Fromage Blanc on Crostini but instead, we got slices of tomato without the crostini, so had to eat with your hands and without a napkin to wipe them on.

The dessert sampler, we were supposed to get creme frache with the Tarte Tatin but was missing and no joke, it was the size of a nickel. The Citrus Granita was served in a tiny paper cup (tiny everything seemed to be a theme) and was approximately the size of 1/2 - 1 unrounded teaspoon. The chocolate cupcake with avacado icing was the only normal sized portion of the evening. So all in all everything served would easily fit on one normal sized paper plate with room to spare and each course had something big/small missing, but to be fair it was all delicious. Just super tiny and very little of it. Good news is the friend who got the tickets ($90 in all) emailed/got a refund + plus offer to come back and comp us all with another try. Personally I'd rather not go back even for free, but if the girls want to guess I will. Don't want them to feel bad - this was a belated birthday dinner, but gah...I didn't even like their wine. How that happened I have no idea. I love wine. 5 kinds of wine and not a winner in the bunch. Oh and someone brought a baby, to a wine event?, that cried the whole time. I know how they felt. Very weird evening.
