Weekend Six

Our normally low-key weekend routine got a burst of excitement when a friend of mine from college came to town for a wedding. Since she lived in New York for a few years, we dispensed with any touristy stuff and focused on food:

1. Did a macaron tasting on Saturday morning: La Maison du Chocolat versus Laduree. The winner: Laduree, hands down. You can barely taste the cookie at M du C--it's completely overpowered by the chocolate filling. (Also: passionfruit filling + chocolate filling = extreme disappointment.)

2. The visiting friend introduced me to a very good Thai place near Union Square (which I had previously thought was populated only by totally unaffordable places).

3. Sunday brunch at the Museum of Art and Design was very good, except that my omelet looked like something that you'd be served on a Delta flight. It had a suspiciously uniform shape, and Jakub and my friend suggested that it had been formed in a MECHANICAL OMELET MAKER. Outrageous. (Why do these exist? More importantly, why is an upscale place using them to turn out omelets?) It tasted fine, but looked like a silicone potholder.

4. I made the cinnamon shortbread posted in the epic T&T cookie thread--very, very good! The thinner you roll it out, the better it tastes.

5. Am otherwise completely behind on holiday baking. Friends of ours declined to get together this weekend, because they were doing lots of holiday baking, which means that I need to get cracking.

6. We still have a lot of turkey in the freezer, but I've learned to take the long-tail view on turkey--you can eat it with nostalgia for the first week or so after Thanksgiving, and then you need to start introducing longer and longer intervals in between leftover concoctions, lest your household mutiny and order takeout without consulting you. I violated this rule and debuted Turkey Quiche too soon last week.

my weekend six

company Christmas party Friday night at the Alyeska ski resort---always a fabulous time but----along with a beautiful Buche de Noel on the dessert table was a tray of store bought cookies. what??? I expect more from the fancy resort.

Sourdough pancakes Saturday morning at the Bake Shop. DH loves these, I'm not so enamored of sourdough.

pork ribs and sauerkraut in the oven for Saturday dinner. mmm mmm good. The first time I made this for DH he put the kraut next to the mashed potatoes on his plate and I informed him that the kraut really belongs on top of the potatoes---at least in my family. He did it correctly this time smileys/smile.gif

canned 8 half pints of Cowboy Candy---pickled jalapenos. first try, I hope they are great because jalapenos are still on sale(1.49/lb---don't laugh, it's a good price up here) and I'm thinking of making a second batch. I cut the sugar to 4.5 cups---seems plenty.(I didn't play around with the acid, but used just 1 c cider vinegar and 1 c white since I don't really like cider vinegar at all.)

sewed up about 25 gift bags from various Xmas fabric stabilized with some iron on featherweight pellon. fun project and I'm ready to fill some for bookclub this weekend. now, what shall I make?? thinking about the cherry and pistachio bark or the peppermint patty cookies or mint nanaimo bars. decisions, decisions.

lost the extra turkey stock that I had frozen and on the back porch till I could re-heat it and freeze in smaller containers. A "pineapple express"(thanks to Hawaii, but keep the warm weather to yourselves for now, it wreaks havoc here)came through over the weekend while I was gone and the warm temps thawed the pot enough that when a ferocious wind hit the table and knocked over the heavy pot, all was lost. doggie is happy though.

Oh this is sooo bad - the cowboy candy looks so good -- but my addiction to canning prevents me from

bringing out the canning equipment again! I had to stash it way back in the basement - out of sight. I'm in a 12 stage rehab after all the small batch canning I did at the end of the summer. I swear if it didn't move I was looking for a recipe to can it!!!!!

In fact, the CSA we belong to closed 3 weeks ago, and the withdrawl is fierce. I was just getting used to not going down there weekly when today I got an email that said, for the first time ever some of the fall crops are still producing even after the halloween snowstorm and the flaky weather we've been having here in NJ. So - tomorrow I get to go to the farm and pick up one last batch of sustainable hakurei turnips, boc choi, swiss chard, broccoli & cauliflower, and possibly some transitional sustainable arugula.

DON"T THESE PEOPLE KNOW I'M IN REHAB!!

So I'll be going down smileys/smile.gif to get my share.... and try to be good....

And if I happen to stop at the grocery store on the way back .... and if the jalapenos look nice and are reasonable.....maybe one small batch would be ok.......and then I swear I won't can until next fall... really... I won't smileys/wink.gif

So Hope reaped the benefit of your toppled

turkey stock? LOL!

You should post a photo of your gift bags Ang, I'd love to see them.

I've been "turkeyed" out since barbecuing

the big bird and have two big tubs of leftovers in the freezer. Now... I'm hankering for them along with the creamed onion gratin that I never did make (have all of the stuff for).

Yep, I agree that you must wait a while for more turkey leftovers so you can appreciate them more.

oh, they are so purty! red and green mixed jalapenos. festive! easy recipe. call me enabler.

doggie popsicle heaven. I will take a photo this weekend when I fill some of the bags.

i'm looking for some initial pins to pin on the ones I made for my nieces. I see that Target has some for not much $$. the bags are the size of a small lunch sack, maybe more narrow. I just pinked the top with my pinking shears, and since I fused the lining on, they shouldn't fray too soon. fun project.

and....since it made just 8 half pints, I used my stock pot for the water bath. no need to drag out

the hidden canning equipment. that doesn't help, does it?!?

Ang, Let me know your thoughts on the Cowboy Candy. I was going to make them this past summer w/

Hungarian peppers; ended up using them in jam. BUT, expect to have another great crop next year. Would love your thoughts on them. Not only taste, but how you use them.

TIA,

Best,
Barb
