* made Cranberry-Apple Coleslaw, very good! (Less vinegar & cranberries is better)

* Had some of the Spinach-Ricotta-Paremesan raviolis w/ Giada's Marinara (both good but the meatless ravs need a heartier sauce)

* Eating the rest of this excellent holiday coffeecake - Cranberry Vanilla Bean

* Will make this tonight Morrocan Turkey Burgers and Acorn Squash filled with Apple-Cranberries

My weekend Six...and after reading yours, I'm hungry!

I have a love/hate relationship with all the produce this time of year. I can't resist buying it, then have so much on hand and a hard time working it all into meals. It's time for Florida corn, green beans and summer squash. The local organic farm had all kinds of lettuce, kale, arugula, radishes, turnips, beets and green onions. Then a stand with all the apples, squash, Brussels, etc that come from futher north. Is there anything prettier than a huge display of all kinds of winter squash? I have my work cut out for me this week planning meals around all the produce I brought home the last couple of days.

Harvested my little crop of baby lettuce I grew in a container from the free seed offer last spring from Earthbound Farms. That was fun and it was very tasty.

We decided to take a walk last night and took the leftover candy along. Saw 3 groups of kids (with parents) headed in the direction of our house and treated them along the way.

I saw a reference to the Lee Brothers' new Southern cook book, and specifically, their recipe for pimento cheese potato gratin in Cooking Light magazine. I found the recipe on line and I'm linking it here, because it really looks like an interesting take on potatoes with cheese, I hope to make it soon.

I found Cento brand DOP-certified San Marzano tomatoes at Fresh Market for $2.00 a can. I've not seen San Marzano tomatoes that cheap before, I hope they're good.

Another Fresh Market find was in a basket of marked down items. Scharffen Berger Chocolate, 9.7 ounce packages marked down to $4.00. The best by date is a year away and I wondered why it was marked down. Then I read here on the site that it's been sold out to Nestle. Perhaps that's why it's being sold off cheaply. So anyone who likes it and shops where it's sold, you might want to check and see if it's marked down there.

Weekend Six

1. Finish off Thursday's Sausage Kale Soup for breakfast this morning smileys/smile.gif

2. Marinating sausage wit peppers and chicken with raspberry chipotle for todays dog testing. (Only 2 more to go after today!!!)

3. A batch of poundcake slices with nutella for hubby's baby shower on Monday. (Real conversation AFTER we went errand running and grocery shopping: "Oh, honey, did I mention I need a gift and a dish for the potluck on Monday?" "No, dear, you didn't. What sex? What colors? When is she do?" "Oh, I don't know.")

4. Pulled croutons (adapted from Nancy Silverton's recipe) for the garlic salad.

5. Waited until the very last minute to buy candy for Trick or Treaters. We had a grand total of 3 at the very last minute. Whatever shall I do with the Reese's PB cups? Someone suggested putting them in cupcakes...

6. Weekly batches of dog food made.

Now it's off to another dog day afternoon....

Weekend Six--->

1. DH left early this morning for Newport News, Va where he will be sailing from tomorrow morning. 4 guys on a 49' sailboat going to Tortola, BVI. It should take them from 8-10 days depending on the weather. They all requested cookies for the trip so I made: Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip, Salty Oat Oatmeal, Snickerdoodles, and Monster Cookies. Packed them all in plastic containers in hopes they will stay dry.

2. At the Farmers Market I bought apples and pears to make apple-pear butter. It's in the oven right now and the house smells wonderful! It is not getting brown but it is thickening up nicely.

3. Also from the Farmers Market: carrots, onions, parsnips, fresh cranberry beans, zucchini, yellow squash and swiss chard. This all went into soup for lunch yesterday along with the addition of celery and garlic. YUM! I made this all in my new 6qt All Clad pot from Sur la Table. They have it on special right now.....

4. On todays' list are Fall Harvest Muffins to go with the butter in the oven. From Bon Appetit 10-94 , I LOVE this issue.

5. Need to come up with things to do with the butternut squash and kale in the fridge. I think I want to try some roasted kale....

6. For dinner last night Braised Pork Chops with Prunes and Apricots along wtih garlic mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli. (Pork chops also from the 10-94 BA issue.) Delicious fall dinner for a rainy night.

Weekend Six -- good thing I had lunch before reading all the above!

Went out Friday for more apples, jars and lids. Too bad I sold all my jars last year at our neighborhood yard sale!

Made applesauce all day -- cortland apples, a touch of raw sugar and a cinnamon stick in each of 4 batches. I peeled with my apple peeler and wrapped the peels in cheesecloth so the sauce is a lovely pink! My new Kirkland 6 quart cast iron dutch oven did such a fine job, and was so easy to clean up.

Bastrop Halloween Celebration was awesome -- the whole town was on Main Street. Like living in a Rockefeller painting!

Finally made the cardamom coffee cake. The flavor of the cardamom is a little too subtle -- maybe mine isn't as fresh as I thought? Also, I followed the recipe exactly, and next time I'll add more toasted walnuts.

I want to get started early this year on my Christmas baking. What to do? My freezer is FULL! Yikes! There isn't even a turkey in there!

That was five. I'm going outside to take a nap in the hammock! The hammock is my six! So there.

Forgot number 7...start working on a Thanksgiving menu

First real Thanksgiving Dinner at our house in a few years. VERY excited about it!!!

Weekend Six

1. Great moussaka and spanakopita for lunch today at a place in our neighborhood. The place is so noisy, though, that I don't think I'll go back unless it's way before the brunch crowd.

2. Making apple crisp today for the first time this fall. (Pathetic, I know. Everyone else must be on their tenth.)

3. Making cheese bread later today...

4. Since we've lived here for a year, I now feel like we've put down enough roots to buy a stockpot.

5. I missed Eric Ripert's talk and documentary showing on Friday. smileys/frown.gif Just too wiped out from work.

6. Found an awesome use for pomegranate molasses (which turned out to be too sour for vinaigrettes): marinating chicken. Mixed with olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic, it is INSANELY good as a marinade. About 3 tablespoons did the trick.

Happy weekend! smileys/smile.gif
