Well, I finally processed my jams/jellies and only one mishap...

I lowered the jars into the boiling water (just like I read, somewhere) verrry carfully, afraid the glass would break. They didn't, but a drop of boiling water hit me smack in the eyeball as if it was a heat-seeking missle! No injuries although it felt a little funny for a minute or two. -- Thanks, Steve, for the step-by-step instructions, by the way -- prior to that, I had read in various sources to don't use paraffin, use paraffin, boil, don't overboil, etc. and it was starting to make my head spin!

And now I have 10 jars of hot pepper blueberry, peach, strawberry, and mulberry preserves in the cupboard waiting for us to open in the winter and spring. And a clean refrigerator. Next, pickles.)

Congratulations!!! I too, was intimidated early on....It really is fun to hear them POP!!!

Your jams sound wonderful. This year, I purchased from Walmart a kit from Ball that has the funnel, some magnet thingy, and a can picker upper..I believe it $6.00. It has been worth it just for the picker-upper....

It can be done without a kettle. For small batches, I use a stock pot with a steamer basket > >

I was just looking to help Dawn keep the expenses down.

After rusting through two canning kettles over the past few years, I finally broke down and bought a relatively pricey stainless steel version. Hopefully, I'll never have to buy another one.

oh I like this...am always struggling with keeping the lids separated in the water, they want to

stick together and then don't get sanitized properly. cool gadget!

that magnet thingy is for getting the lids out of the water---I can't find one. and that POP is the

best sound.

I have processed smaller batches too -- I put a folded dish towel on the bottom of the pan to keep

the jars from bouncing around.

Just bpought 3 for stocking stuffers then thought, dang I need to use this NOW!

Just canned seven more jars of wild blackberry jam collected on the way home from the coast.
I forgot where I bought the magnet tool, it was NorPro. When I remember, I'll post it here with an edit.
