Well, summer's over. I went up to look at my basil, and what I hadn't picked (not much) was

black and droopy. I didn't think we had a frost yet, but we must've. AND, the last remaining tomatoes (the nice, big heirlooms) - that I was waiting for them to turn from yellow to red - had been picked by someone and placed on the front desk for everyone to take! Sniff, sniff.

Unless, if anyone knows, they fell off of the vine the night it got cold?

Can't imagine such an early frost. We plant here mid March

and first freeze averages around November 17. Some years we don't have one until into December.

Too bad. I can send you some now. Hawaiian basil. I found a produce guy who was willing to

deal and I bought sooooooooooooooo much. I was thrilled to find some. I have made more pesto than my freezer has room for and I have about a pound of cleaned and trimmed leaves left.

Time to get creative.

I'm just so happy to have pesto again though. I had to leave behind a freezer full when I moved. As well as so much else. broke my little heart.

So any ideas for a pound of basil? To be eaten by one person and a cat.

Basil is the most sensitive to frost plant there is. In SoCal, we rarely have frosts

enough to register, but there is always at least one night when all the basil freezes.

I can't account for the tomatoes. They don't travel on their own.

We definitely have frosts here in the desert. I have a potted basil plant, so I'll...

...try moving it onto the front porch. If faces due south, so it will get full sun for most of the day in the winter. The overhang should protect it from the frost.

I love having fresh basil within reach at all times. I'd hate to see it go away!

Michael, I would think that even Arizona cold nights would get it. Very sensitive plants with so

much water in their leaves. I find any night below about 38 degrees will damage basil.

My cousin in Florida was talking about this same thing tonight

She said her huge thriving plant croaked at about 35. She said she always does basil in pots now & either puts them in the garage or covers them when it gets even close to freezing.
