What a fantastic store. I had the most delicious passion fruit sorbet. It popped in your mouth. However, they were giving out samples of a marinara sauce which I fell for and bought 2 jars @ $6 each. It is the best jarred sauce I have ever had and tasted just like mine which I make all the time. Its "Dell'Amore" and has no preservatives and no sugar. Unfortunately, unless I buy it on line, there are no stores selling it near where I live.

We grow plum tomatoes which I peel, crush and freeze for the winter.

What I do is very basic. I simply saute 3 minced garlic cloves and one diced onion in olive oil. Add the crushed tomatoes and two cans of tomato paste, some oregano, salt and pepper, chopped parsley and about 1/4 cup of parmesan and some basil which I also have frozen. Then simmer it for about 1-1/2 hours.

There's a lot of water from the tomatoes when they defrost and I add some water if its getting too thick.

Nothing fancy but the jarred sauce I referred to above was nothing fancy either.

Of course the flavor of the summer tomatoes is what makes this so tasty.

Venda is just great as are the other stores on Federal Hill in Provincetown.

My problem with jarred sauces is the onion and carrot. I know, I knoe, that's what makes the sauce sweet without adding sugar but they are just wrong to my taste. The only tomato sauce in which I use carrots or onion is Bolognese sauce which is so complex that these flavors melt away. Even Trader Joes does not have a sauce without onions so I go on with my own--canned plum tomatoes(whole, no puree), garlic, a bit of tomato paste and olive oil. How long it's cooked depends on how acid th tomatoes happen to be. I like Rienzi brand.

Coincidentally, I used a premium sauce for the first time last night, La Famiglia. It is

delicious. The local Publix just recently started carrying premium sauces and when I first saw this one at $7.99, I passed on it. However, it's on sale now for $4.00 a jar, so I bought the Tomato-Basil Masterpiece and a Sunday Marinara. We had the tomato-basil last night on eggplant parm and really enjoyed it. I'm stocking up. I didn't believe a jarred sauce could be so good, it's very different from the usual Classico or Barilla that I buy. More tomatoey, less sweet and much better texture, to my taste.

Actually, I find it so easy to cook up a big batch of plain sauce and freeze it in small

containers. Then I can defrost and add goodies to to it when I use it. Lately, I've been mixing with my homemade bolognese sauce for that great flavor but less rich.
