We're having a bbq (providing the rain goes away - what a crazy year for weather!) and here's what I'm planning:

Bikinitini cocktails

Fava bean crostini (thanks to the great string here!)

Grilled Omaha burgers and hot dogs with fun garnishes - I'm thinking of fresh buns from Metropolis bakery

spring red onions

roma tomatoes

avocados

broiled bacon

some nice lettuces

chipotle mayo

variety of cheeses for the burgers (dilled havarti, blue, strong cheddar, a swiss?)

any other ideas?

Memorial Day Baked Beans

Mama Dee's Vidalia Sweet Onion Pie

maybe potato salad but I just saw a recipe for a salad in Food & Wine with arugula and watermelon and feta that sounded so refreshing.

hopefully someone will bring a dessert otherwise watermelon.

Wish it was this weekend instead of next!

I vote yes on potato salad. My favorite is on epi called "Picnic Potato Salad," and Curious posted

one recently that had dill, cream and radishes--haven't tried it yet.

Sometimes Italian sausages and/or Polish, Knockwurst etc. are nice in addition to the hot dogs.

I plan on making crock pot 'baked' beans

I frequently make this for gatherings.

1 lb. ground beef
3/4 lb. bacon cut in small pieces
1 cup onion, chopped
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can butter lima beans, drained
2 tsp. liquid smoke
1 Tbs. white vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup ketchup
1 tsp. salt
dash of pepper

Brown the beef; drain off fat. Saute bacon and onions and drain. Put all ingredients in the crock pot. Simmer on high for 4 hours.

REC: Easy Baked Beans. Always a crowd-pleaser, never a lot of leftovers....

Easy Baked Beans

1/2 cup Grandma's Robust Flavor Molasses
40 oz. canned pork and beans, drained
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup ketchup
2 Tbsp prepared mustard
4 slices bacon, partially cooked

Heat oven to 375*F. Combine all ingredients
except bacon. Cut 2 slices bacon into small
pieces. Mix into beans. Pour into 1 1/2 qt
casserole. Lay remaining 2 slices bacon on
top. Bake, covered for 30 minutes. Uncover
and continue baking for 20 minutes.

This recipe serves 6-8, but I always double
the recipe and bake it in a 13 x 9.

Memorial Day (FRC)

Brats on the Grill
Hamburgers
Baked Beans
Marinated Veggies (fresh veggies like grape tomatoes, bell pepper chunks, broccoli, etc. marinated in low fat Italian dressing overnight)
Cole Slaw
Oven Roasted New Potatoes with Garlic

Not a great deal exciting, I guess, except the brats are marinated in a beer-sliced onion mixture.
