what are you planning for Valentine's dinner? we're going to have a "Sweet Heart's"

dinner since a couple of my girlfriends are single and not dating. I don't know where I came up with Lady & Tramp last night but the dinner scene is so touching I'm going to to use it. just a simple dinner of spagetti & meatballs, crusty bread, lots of candles and maybe Chianti bottles on the table. if I can find a red & white checkered cloth, all the better. salad, of course, and probably molten choc cakes for my chocohalic friends. it should be a lovely, snuggy evening smileys/smile.gif

Fab idea!!! I love it. smileys/smile.gif I haven't a clue what we're doing... Don't laugh, but>>

I live with my in-laws, which means that if I make dinner (which I usually do), we invite them to eat with us (and they usually do).

I'm sure not everyone's Valentine's dinner involves the in-laws--mine didn't, until a moment ago...but my father-in-law is a full-time caregiver for my mother-in-law, and it would be nice to do something for them. I have no idea when the last time was when they celebrated Valentine's Day (or if they do, since most (male!) Czechs consider it to be an American holiday foisted on them, post-revolution...

So...shooting from the hip--Pepper Steak, Potatoes with Roasted Garlic and Parmesan, Beet Salad... Maybe pears poached in wine, at the end. Or maybe this is my ideal dinner; however, people here don't eat much for dinner..... So it might be chlebicky (small sandwiches)--more elaborate than it sounds.

But kudos to you, Randi, for the great Lady & The Tramp theme. smileys/smile.gif

Erinin, what a lovely gift to give them. I'm sure your FIL will enjoy being taken care of by you

for an evening.

Maybe you could rent a dvd of the movie "Lady and the Tramp"?

Or maybe that's the mother in me coming out ;o)

I love the idea. 'Gotta have a bowl of breadsticks, too!

I was thinking of breadsticks too... enough wine and I'll bet one of them would fetch "-))

we thought about getting the DVD but there were concerns about leaving my Island to watch it. I can't get these friends out of my kitchen for a "proper" sitdown. everyone just loves being at the Island.

In fact, it wasn't much of a celebration in Canada until recently either. A card, but not the huge

planning for dinners and all.

I guess we need lots of reasons to celebrate.

ya know, valentine's was much more fun when we got colored paper and lace doilys and made

cards. we usually don't do a big thing for valentine's day but one girlfriend just had a nasty breakup and I want her to be snugged and loved and thinking about the jerk!

I do have bar stools under the island and the peninusla. they are just the simple

little ones with no backs to them. we do have one with a back cause Don likes it better. they just slide under and are great for entertaining.

the island is a few inches lower than the counters. it makes it easier to chop, knead and such. I really think counter tops are too high for comfortable food prep unless you're wearing stiletto heels. ya know those days are over '-))

Noooo, but my kitchen and family room are open so I can see/hear the TV.

I have just 2 stools for the end of my island and my guests always fight over those. Just the simple ones too. they end up leaning on the island all comfy with their elbows and sipping the beverage du jour while I cook( or put them to work)

I remember my favourite was a little classmate who took the letters from Campbell's veg soup, which

I think then was just the way it was...later becoming Alphabet Soup....and dried them, glued them onto a red paper heart to read, "Be My Valentine" ,and put a doily around it.

He won the prize. Obviously his mother did it for him. By the time he finished high school, he still could not have managed that. That was Grade 3. This memory is crazy. (and the card wasn't even for me)

I remember we used to walk into class noting who had the most Valentine cards on her desk.

careful, TV and chopping can be dangerous..... I can see mine too.

I got more stools when we got the big butcher block island in. between the island and penisula, there are 12 stools. everyone just loves eating the island in spite of the dinning room table being right there.

making Joe's manicotti was great fun this way. the guys were seated and I just flipped the crepes onto the island and girlfriends stuffed, rolled and put them into the pan. sooo easy!

what a great memory. and ooooh, the pressure of getting cards, so glad that's over smileys/smile.gif
