What happened to black walnuts? Haven't been able to find them for years!

It's sad, the wood is prized for making furniture & many trees have been cut to harvest lumber. >>

For several years back in the late 60s and 70s, tree rustlers were very active. Most of the trees were out in woods away from farm homes and the thieves could cut them and take the wood without being seen. Some farmers with walnut trees on their property sold them for lumber because they knew they would probably be cut by thieves anyway. And that's one reason black walnuts are in short supply.

Oh no! Not bitter at all.... TOTALLY different taste from a regular walnut, in a class by itself.

I have child-hood memories of smashing them with a hammer on an anvil. Dad would find them in the

woods, bring them home, and our job was to crack them open. He picked out the meat. They were soooo good!

PS When he brought them home, they still had the green outer skin on them. He would scatter them on

the lawn, I think maybe smoosh them up, hose them down, and the acid from them would make all the earthworms come to the surface, wriggling and wrything to get away from the juice. This is how he collected his fishing worms!
