What happened to (nongolden) pineapples?

Am I the only person who doesn't care for golden pineapples, finding them overly sweet? Are golden pineapples the only ones produced today? Ann

What are nongolden pineapples? In all my years of buying pineapples

I have never seen this. I buy fresh, Hawaiian pineapples, sweet, and ripe.

Sorry! smileys/smile.gif I should have just said plain pineapples as opposed to golden pineapples(m).

I can't remember what year Golden pineapples appeared in the supermarkets but prior to that, the pineapples I bought were not anywhere near as sweet as they are today. They are always referred to as Golden pineapples in the newpaper ads and on store labels. I do remember there were several articles in the papers about this new type of pineapple that would be sweeter and they put out samples and I thought (after tasting the samples) that I'd just stick with the regular pineapples. But they disappeared!

Kinda like pink grapefruit juice replacing the old (and tarter) yellow grapefruit juice. When's the

last time you saw a grapefruit that wasn't pink/ruby red/riostar?

There are many varieties of pineapple just like other fruits

The term "golden pineapple" is not familiar to me- it may just be a marketing thing your grocery store labeled it with to make people believe the pineapple is ripe and sweet which is how a lot of the different pineapples are especially when they ripen on the plant.

If the "nongolden" pineapples disappeared it could be because the produce buyer has a different source to buy pineapple from....and the pineapples themselves might be in a different stage of ripeness than what you are used to.

This is a new variety from Dole & Del Monte. It is noticeably golden in color and

is very sweet and juice, but does lack some of the fruit acid that many like. I find them to be more consistantly ripe, but a one note pony.

Melissa, here in Redding, I can still buy white grapefruit. I prefer the Rio Star

which come into season around Feb. I like the pink as it is sweeter. But I have seen a white type that is also very sweet.

Thanks, all. I think this is it. Unfortunately for me, the "golden" variety is the only variety

available in supermarkets in my (northern Virginia) area. It reminds me of over-ripe fruit in color and taste. Too bad they don't offer both.

I buy those little red mesh type bags of (I think it's called) Desert Glory (m)

and they're pretty good. If not, I slice in half and sprinkle a little sugar over them and let them sit at least a half hour. I've seen this brand at Safeway and our regional grocery chains.

Just checked out this recipe at epi and copied it. Thanks! This is

a great "sauce" which would also be good with vermicelli and maybe some grilled shrimp.
