Where are people buying their spices these days?

With the ever-rising prices at Penzey's I'm looking for new sources. I use so much cumin, I cannot keep it in the house and I really need to get to an Indian grocery to check on prices.

Any cheap online sources with quality spices?

The markup on spices is outrageous.

I asked this awhile back, Charley told me about this place. But then, I went back to Penzeys. DH

doesn't care for many of their blends and buys steak seasonings, etc at Costco. Kirkland brand.

Edited to say that I stayed with Penzeys because I could buy smaller amounts than some places offer.

Yes, those are very nice prices. Will have to order a samping to check quality...

Just called local Indian grocery, 14oz. bag of cumin is...

$4.00

Go figure.

Yes, outrageous markup on spices!

You want a good price on cumin? Try"

a good Mexican Market or Indian/asian grocer. I got a 2-cup glass canning jar at a tiny local Indian grocer for about $3.50. You can get stuff by the BAG (some of dem bags are big too) really cheap, pretty fresh, because they sell so much.

I love ethnic markets!

Indian grocers are SO much cheaper than elsewhere - big bag of cardamom for $6

and I've seen big bags of cumin at the Mexican markets. Do you use powdered or seed? After using the seed, I'll never go back... taste is SO different from the powdered.

Just got back from the Indian Grocery...

I could kick myself for not shopping there. There used to be one around the corner from me and they moved several miles away. I went to one near the university and came out with 5 bags of stuff. LOL

Green chickpeas! A lovely rose syrup to make rose lassis, etc. 14 oz. bag of cumin powder was $3.99.

Got all the spices to make the recipes I posted below, including fresh curry and fenugreek leaves!!!

I'll give a report after dinner tonight. I'm going to force myself to follow the recipes exactly.

I can see it coming....you will master Indian cooking then go on a major trip

all over India, collecting ingredients, discovering everything you can about the culture. You will learn and discover and cook yourself into a frenzy until you wring every bit of knowledge out and store it in your fine brain.

Never half-way. Uh-uh.

So, you will follow a recipe to a "t" and not change it the first time??? This I gotta see- LOL

That was our last stop before leaving Austin when moving to FL. I bought lots of bags, problem

was, we stashed them in the trunk of the car and those little plastic bags allowed the umm...aromas to spread. Especially all the ground chiles. The trunk of the car smelled pretty strong after a day and a half on the road. Luckily, it was December. Don't think I'd have tried that in the summer heat.
